Stainless bolts

Recommended Posts

I'm finally going to clean my oil screen this weekend and i thought while the casings open i might as well replace the bolts with stainless ones so it should be a bit simpler opening next time.

Thing is i can generally only find A2 grade bolts which i'm sure is a bit on the weak side? Will they be okay to use?

Also, when i put it back together should i use vibration washers or a dab of thread lock (copper grease needed?), currently it has flanged bolts.

Cheers guys, hopefully wont be long till ive finished playing and can go for my first long ride!

A2 will be fine for casings and low stress areas, and use copperslip/copper grease.

Unless you need the casings off, do one at a time, that way you know what bolt goes where, and you shouldn't need gaskets etc..

have a look in guides/manuals, theres a thread about stainless bolts in there.. will give you an idea of what needs to be HT High Tensile (Strong Bolts) and what can be A2...

Cheers, its just the casing as i need to remove it to get at the oil screen.

So is it worth using anti shake/vibration washers?

no, just tighten them up.

they aren't fitted by the manufacturer, so aren't necessary.

check your manual first before putting copper slip on them all, 3 of my casing bolts need loctite as there is an oil way behind them.
