PhatDad Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Slow speed front end tuck caused me to whack the side of my head knocking me the **** out. I then slid down the road unconscious picking up the extra scrapes on the side and front.http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs052.snc3/13936_186082538449_678768449_3090374_1672260_n.jpgAs you can see, banged the right hand side and head ended up flopping around quite far to scratch the front here.http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs052.snc3/13936_186081923449_678768449_3090368_4357062_n.jpg Quote

PhatDad Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 fu*k me!!! that looks nasty!!glad your still here to ride another day I can't remember much of it so no harm done. Amazing how hard you can get whipped towards the tarmac though. Quote
asharin Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 My old el-cheapo Takachi helmet, came off at 30ish, hit ground, it lost the top air vent and got scratched to buggery. Re-attached the vent but still replaced the helmet Quote
Ingah Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Hit the back of my head on the floor at 20mph. Hurt a little, didn't require treatment or even an ambulance. Back on the bike minutes later (it was a CG therefore i think it only suffered a broken indicator lens). Helmet was replaced soon after. You're *supposed* to replace helmets that you've simply dropped on the floor, let alone those smashed against it with force! The reason for this is that the outer shell is that hard plastic material you can see, which is designed largely to stop something sharp going through (polycarbonate plastic in cheaper helmets). The bit that cushions your head and reduces the deceleration of your head (the inner lining) is inside, and you can't see it. Nor can you see how it compresses in an drop/accident, and stays compressed even afterwards, thereby rendering no more protection. Hit the same sort of area again, and i'd expect the effect to be largely similar to not wearing one, (minus the abrasions and lacerations of the skin that the plastic will still help against). Your brain will still bash into your skull at full speed, causing it to swell and ultimately killing you. Replacing the helmet is more than a good idea One further thing to note for those that think they won't hit the same spot again: I've heard (hearsay i'll admit, but i've heard it so many times it's likely to be fact) plenty of times that a vast majority, even all, of the rest of the helmet is potentially compromised by a hard hit. So yes, you may hit the other side next time, but then your helmet may proceed to crack open due to the earlier crash. In a nutshell, crashed helmets are useless as anything but ornaments and momentos. Soft tissue damage to my left (phew!) wrist which is still and issue 5 months on. Bruising to my knees and my whole body ached for a few days as you might imagine. Probably of most interest to you is that I suffered from a headache that lasted 4 days after the crash. Quote
Guest Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 sounds nasty! glad your alright head ache for 4 days?? jesus!!! i broke my arm on my pedal bike about 4 years ago and i still cant move it the same amount as my other arm. hope its gets better Quote
