Hi all,

Got the CBT and theory in the bag and mod1 booked for next week, start training on an ER5 this weekend. I have limited previous experience on bikes, mainly off-road and only upto 250cc and this was 20 years ago in my teens. I have been told bigger bikes are easier to ride, I did ok on the 125cc but looking at video clips of the mod 1 test I think keeping balance on the slalom, figure eight and u-turn is going to be my biggest challenge. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, just done module one myself. The trick to do these manouvers is to keep your revs up and balance your clutch well whilst feathering the back brake, and keep the bike moving. Dont go to slow and don't use the front brake or youll put a foot down!!

It's not as bad as people think!

Hope this makes sense and good luck

The slalom and the figure of 8 should be easy. One trick that is good to know is there is no limit to how wide you take it, so dont try and keep it really tight, and wobble your way round it, take it wide, steady and at a pace where you feel comfortable. feathering back break works wonders, I went round that part of it with much higher revs than was relly needed, feathering the back break and riding on teh clutch basically. I just let my bike take one for the team so it made it easier for me to control.

Once you've got used to them, then practice the u turn, as this follows the same principal in a tighter space.

Don't fear the 500! No different going from a 125 to a 500 than it is going from a 1L car to a 2L car in my opinion - chances are it'll be more stable and have better brakes than a 125 anyway. It'll be heavier and maybe have a wider turning circle so the manual handling will be trickier but I think overall Mod1 is easier on a larger bike.

I don't know how big you are but there's no way a 125 would drag my fat ass to 50kph in the distance allowed either :D

I believe mod 1 is easier on a 500.

And id say more than going from a 1l to a 2l car :P

Being that I did mine on a 125cc I was amazed to sit on my New bike and I find I could lift both feet up while stationary and the bike balanced !

On a 125 with the skinny tyres it would never do that I was just amazed how well balanced these big bikes are ! (if that helps)

Thanks for all the replies,

I start my training on Sat and probably/hopefully find it easier than what I imagine.
