Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Hi guys and gals, I'm 17 in 5 months (so perhaps a bit early to be asking this but I like planning ahead )and I'm looking into getting a 125cc motorbike instead of a car, mainly because I need to get around but insurance on a car is too damn expensive .However, one of my hobbies is cycling i.e. bicycling (I'll get me coat... ) and I need my own transport to get to my local cycling club which is over 20 miles away. I could easily cycle this but it would take about an hour and then i'd do the 40 mile club ride and then have to cycle home agin .So you can see my problem. "GET TO THE POINT!" I hear you cry . Is there anything I can buy to transport my bike... using a motorcycle?I've been scouring google for "bicycle rack for motorcycle" etc but cant seem to find anything very usefull, just forums and stuff detailing home made things. I have also seen a few trailers (that are expensive and maybe a bit small) Some info on whats out there, and some advice on how to (or even if I CAN) have a bicycle on a 125cc motorbike would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanceJames Quote
mealexme Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 not sure, but i think u need a full liscence, or maybe a different liscence to tow a trailer, and putting a bicycle on the back would prob be classed as over loading it, which is illegal, plus it would seriously effect the ballance. Also, say hi in the newbie thread Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Don't think such a thing is available.. Can the bicycle not be left there? Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I think it would be very dodgy, the only way I can see it working is by stripping the bike right down and somehow fastening the frame and wheels seperate on some kind of specially adapted pannier rack, but remember a 125 is quite small! Now if you were thinking of getting a Gold Wing, things would be so much easier Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Could I not get a full liscence at 17?I found this:ww.f2motorcycles.ltd.uk/trailers.htmlIf you scroll down it has a short discription of laws regarding motorcycles towing.my bike is very light. much less than 150kg. Does this help at all? Thanks for your replies Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Don't think such a thing is available.. Can the bicycle not be left there? Yes, however, I wouldn't be able to train during the week. Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 two bicycles? One to train on etc?Dunno how much the things are .... they lack an engine Quote
mealexme Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Could I not get a full liscence at 17?No, you can get a restricted liscence at 17 and have it for two years, or wait untill you are 21 and do Direct Access and get a full liscence. So i guess that means a trailer is out of the question Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Ok, so I found this: w.2x2cycles.com/store-main.phpHowever, It looks like it would topple you over!I haven't had much experiance riding motorcycles. Just a 100 cc 1980's bike i rode around my field a year ago, which broke after I had the bright idea of taking it over a ramp . So what do you think, does the 2x2 bike rack look good to you, or would it severely put you off balance?thanks again. Quote
Bertie Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 i once mopeded about 4 miles to work (bike shop) with my road bike wheels in the footwell. that was exciting, i couldnt touch the floor at all without dropping the wheels so had to hope i didnt have to stop for traffic lights!! Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 two bicycles? I will have to check the wording of the vehicle overloading law. I think it is down to individual police officers to say if it is overloaded or not though Quote
Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 My bike weighs 10.5Kg's is this overloading? Quote
mealexme Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 FOUND IT!http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069855, under the first picture.you MUST NOT overload your vehicle or trailer. You should not tow a weight greater than that recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicleFat lot of use that is... doesnt say what overloading is... only says how much overloading a trailer is... Guest Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Looks like I'm gonna have to save up and get another bicycle instead. shame, a motorbike would have been cool .I'm still gonna get one to do other things though. It'll just have to wait a bit longer because I'll be spending my money on another bycicle. Thanks for all the help guys. James Quote

There must be another way round it...Bus?Train?Friend with car? Quote
Guest Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I personally would sod all this nonsense, leave the cycling club, and join a motorbike club xDOther wise, just strap the bike to your back, wheels in the air. Quote
Mightycaz Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 tHE STICKER ON THE FRAME OF EACH BIKE WILL TELL YOU THE MAXIMUM CARRYING CAPACITY OF EACH BIKE! i DON'T THINK A PUSH BIKE WOULD BE TOO HEAVY AS BE COUNTED AS OVERLOADING IT!Edit: Sorry about the caps......... Quote
cypek Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Get a bike like this one:http://www.likecool.com/Gear/Bike/Folding%20Bike%20Bag/Folding-Bike-Bag.jpg Quote
Bertie Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 surely carrying a bicycle wouldnt be overloading it? it would be far far lighter than carrying a pillion.... Quote
Guest Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Yeh, a bike would be a lot lighter, mine weighs 10.5 kg's. Thats less than an anerexic passenger .looks like the 2x2 company don't do postage to the uk. Quote
chiz Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 You're looking for something along the lines of this;http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h ... 29,r:0,s:0Surely they must be available in the UK somewhere. Quote
Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Even if they did ship to the UK, do you thing a 125cc would be able to handle the bicycle on the back? All the pictures appear to be on very large, heavy bikes.Thanks. Quote
chiz Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I can't see why not. Bear in mind most 125s are designed to carry a rider and pillion, a few kilos of pedal bike isn't gonna make much difference. My only concern would be the weight distribution, i.e. it's all over the rear of the bike, but again, it's only a few kilos.I reckon someone with the necessary metal work knowledge could fabricate something like that for very little cost, all you'd need to get started would be a rear rack for your bike that they can work from.
