Bikes been satnding a long time, won't star. Help?

Hi, I have a ZXR 400 and it's been standing still for about 6 months and it has a brand new battery now but it's not starting. Any ideas? I have tried pushing the bike and then starting in 1st or 2nd but no luck there. What should I check? I'm a total newbie so explain in detail please

carbs will need cleaning as they will be gummed up from fuel common problem on the zxr400

Do I need to take the bike in to a garage or can I do this myself?

Can do it your self mate, grab a haynes.

Get new fuel, clean carbs, maybe some fresh spark plugs aswell.

cant get a haynes for the zxr 400 but its easy enough

tank off airbox off remove carbs remove float bowls on bottom of carbs and clean with carb cleaner

Is this safe enough for a total newbie to do? Anything I need to avoid or look out for? Thanks for the help.

when you have got the carbs off only open one at a time up so you can see where the bits go there will be 4 screws holding the float bowl onto the bottom of each carb undo all 4 the lift off bowl there will be 2 jets inside next to each other take out one at a time clean then replace one at a time that way you cant go wrong

also make sure you use good fitting tools as the screws are really soft!

Good fitting tools and take it slow, one at a time, got it, will have a go at it tomorrow, thanks. Gotta learn it sometime

Have a look on youtube. there should be some vids about cleaning carbs. also download haynes manual for zx6r for example. it will look slightly different but you will get the general idea how to remove carbs and how they look inside. link to manual is in our manuals section
