I noticed my back wheel isnt as free as it should be whilst cleaning the chain. when i spin the wheel i can hear the brake stopping the wheel.

is this beacuse the caliper is covered in crap inside ?

Yes 777GT, you have a sticking piston or two. It's important not to just push the piston back in as the crud on it will damage the seals. Take pads out, pump pistons out about 10mm, clean crud off and polish piston. Push back in, if not an easy push, strip caliper, clean everything, replace seals, apply Red Rubber grease to seals, push piston back in, replace pads, put back on disc and bleed.

I had the same on the front. Thought it was a brake issue but turned out to be the bearings. Sort out the brakes as mentioned and if it still happens would be worth bearing (excuse the pun) in mind it could be the bearings!
