So you're told not to drive home after you've done your driving test, but I realise the impracticalities with not riding home after the test. Still why the discrepancies?

I never looked up whether it was just advisory or statutory that you can't drive home after you've done your driving test.

I rode back after my test, I rode like a complete fag. I really don't know why, I think I was thinking about when I could go and look at some big bikes

I think maybe the driving thing is something to do

with insurance on the instructor's car only being

for learners. (I'm only guessing)

I know of no reason why you can't ride

straight after passing.

You might want to stop near the test centre

and calm down a bit first though!( I'd have a smoke  )

That is correct, so if you pass your test in/on your own vehicle, like I did, you are fine to ride/drive home. If you're using your instructors bike, you are also fine to ride back to theirs, under their supervision, as I understand.

When I passed mod2 my instructor escorted me back but without the daft earpiece in, he led the way and didn't hold back for me.

I passed on my own bike, just took the L plates off and rode home (it felt SO good not to have those L-plates!! ).

their was 2 of us and the instructor when i went, we rode back on the instructors bike without the earpieces, and let loose a bit lol, i think it was the best ride id had at that point , thoroughly enjoyed it...then went home and straight out on the cat, and spent th first 20 minutes avoiding stopping at junctions incase i couldnt put my feet down enough lol, was excellent slow control practise :D

It's advisory, and it's also for historical reasons.

Driving school insurance used to cover owner/driver, and any provisional licence holder whilst under instruction with teh owner/driver in the car. Once they pass they are a full licence holder, therefore not covered by the insurance. It's different now, and necessarily so due to post-test training schemes.

Of course the other point is that newly qualified drivers are statistically far more likely to be involved in an RTC than a provisional licence holder, so maybe not letting you drive is a sensible move.... :P

If you test on your own bike then ride home afterwards, then strcitly speaking you should call your insurers from teh test centre, as you will be insured as a provisional licence holder. In practice I guess they exercise a degree of flexibility... and then increase the premium once you tell them you passed.
