So all is not as good as it seems. My exhaust is split at the clamp, behind the gasket. A local garage has quoted me £50 to weld it up..

I have seen a pair of stainless silencers for £240

Couple of questions.

Would you pay for the repair and hope for the best?

Or buy the stainless cans?

Would I have to buy stainless downpipes or will the cans slip on the steel originals (in pretty decent condition)?

Would I have to have the carbs rejetted/balanced?

The advert for the cans claims that they will not require any carb adjustment, but is that true?

See pics for an idea of severity

GPZ500s, you reckon I would be better going to a metal workshop instead of a garage?

Yes mate, have you got better pix of the damage? Any decent welder/fabricator could sort that for a tenner

I'll try.

This is as the exhaust sits on its own

If I pivot it on its mounting.

I only have an arc welder and my skills are limited to say the least  plus the rods have been in the garage for months. I might just bite the stainless exhaust system bullet. Want to keep 2-2 though, deffo wanna avoid 2-1.

Google. Welder/ fabricator in your area. Shouldn't cost more than 20 quid. Why do you prefer to spend over 200???

Worked in a fab shop for years and quite often got people wandering in asking for odd little welding jobs etc. Best bet is to try on a lunchtime and ideally take the section of exhaust off, Im sure they'll be more than happy to earn a tenner in their lunch time doing a 5 min guvy job.

If you decide to go down the other road of replacing them, my bike still had the steel down and link pipes with new stainless cans, all fitted and worked great until the down pipes rusted, now stainless all way through.

Not 100% sure about rejetting/balancing carbs but I'm sure that'is for if you change from 4 into 2 to 4 into 1 and viceversa, if it state direct replacement with no rejetting/carb balancing i'm sure the air flow is the same.
