AdeyT Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Problem is the bike refusing to start and after half a dozen attempts it drains the battery until just a clicking sound.I have had my 2001 E7 ZZR600 for well over a year and it gets used daily, runs fine, the bike has done 16k miles. This problem has happened twice.First time it happened about three months ago, I had ridden about 5 miles and stopped for fuel. The second time was first thing this morning trying to set off for work. On both occasions after failing to start the first couple of attempts I checked the kill switch and side stand before the battery was drained but still no joy. I have ended up bump starting both times which it did with ease which makes me think this is an electrical problem, could be wrong though. I have checked the battery after the first time it happened and can’t remember the exact voltages but they all checked out ok with the engine off /idling/revving etc. Would I be correct in thinking the solenoid is ok with it clicking? My thoughts are maybe the starter motor but would this be an intermittent problem?I know this could be any number of things but I would appreciate any suggestions on where to start looking. Quote
Guest Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I'm no expert on bikes but from what I understand if the engine is turning over but not firing then it wont be your starter motor, if the engine is not turning over and it happens intermittently it could be a dead point on the starter motor. Try putting it into gear and pushing the bike to just rotate the starter motor to a different position - it might then turn over when trying to start. If your bike is turning over but not starting it could be an electrical problem or a lack of fuel. Quote
Tango Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 How old is the battery? If it goes flat after half a dozen attempts to start the bike it may be not holding a charge. If you can bump it and it starts easily then it's not likely to be fuel....and probably not an electrical issue other than a low battery. If the voltage of the battery drops too much when spinning the starter there may not be enough to give a strong enough spark to fire the engine. Obviously when you bump it the voltage is high enough to fire it. Can you jump the battery from another source? If the battery has not been replaced for a few years that is where I would start personally....... Remember the KISS principle...... Quote
