I went and did it! I bought myself a mid range runabout to zip about on while I rebuild the Triumph. It's a CB600f-6 Hornet with the upside down forks, one of the last ones built before the 07 model. It is actually on an 07 plate and had only done 8,000 miles. I bought it from a guy at work who had bought it as a project a couple of years ago with a view to passing his test and riding it around in restricted form (heathen). The test never happened and he needed to sell it fast so I got it pretty cheap. On the downside this was a cosmetic damage restoration so I've had to respray the tank and do a few more tidying up bits on top of the full baseline service I always do to privately bought bikes.

Now the problem. After putting everything back together, it wont start. It ran before, albeit with a slight misfire on one cylinder and I did take it for a couple of short blasts just to see if there was anything I should address while servicing it. I've got healthy sparks at the (new) plugs and there seems to be fuel getting through to the carbs. I'm suspecting the fuel cut-off solenoid valve as I pulled the carbs back to make sure there were no restrictor washers left, and that everything had been put back properly when they were removed so, obviously, the airbox came out as well. I can't see whether I may have pulled the vac pipe off but it seems secure (there's some damn rubber "apron" over the top of the engine that makes easy viewing impossible). As it had previously run out of fuel, I've had the fuel tap off to check for debris and it's all clear and undamaged.

My other thought was that one of the tank vent pipes may have got trapped when the airbox went back in so maybe I should try running it with a gravity fed dummy tank as this would at least tell me that there is a fuel feed problem.

Anybody got any ideas?

Had the multimeter on it and there's no power to the fuel shutoff valve. Can't find the fault though. Anybody know any good mobile motorbike sparks in the Bridgend/Cardiff area?

Happend simalar to me when I took my restrictors out and did the air filter but it ran ok when I took out the air filter so replaced it .

Worth taking out the air filter incase its blocked if all else fails ?

Tried it running without the filter box-same thing. I'd fitted a brand new filter anyway. There's no suction at all from the carb take off between no 3 and 4, the fuel cut-off doesn't seem to be working either. If I fill the carbs manually, it runs fine until the float bowls empty and then stops.

I'm absolutely stumped :(

Just a thought (worked for some reason on an old cb750 when it had issues). Try pulling the vacuum pipe from the carb and sucking on it, then stick it back. Sounds silly, but my old bike seemed to have an air block, and this worked straight away.

Worth a try, and it wont cost anything.

Thanks for the suggestion but I've already tried that, both sucking and blowing (which is how I feel about the bike at the moment).

I've had bikes and worked in engineering for 28 years, but this has got me baffled. I'd by-pass the cutoff valve if there was any suction. Tomorrow, for the first time ever, I'll be taking a bike to a dealer (well, getting the dealer to pick it up anyway) and leaving them to sort it out.

With a bit of luck it'll be something silly that I've overlooked.
