mrcheese Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I am after some advice please. I have a Honda CB1. For those who don't know it it is a 4 cylinder 400cc bike. I have a fuel pump problem. The pump is described as a ticker type. Now I have seen it running I can see why it is called that! The bike will cut out. Taking off the cover of the pump and flicking the points will get the pump running and the bike starts again. I do get sparks across the contacts now and again. Yesterday it cut out three times. When I put the bike back on the road at the end of November last year the fuel pump wasn't working. I took the pump off and replaced it with a similar looking one a mate had laying about. I ended up with fuel leaking from one of the carbs. I am not sure if one of the floats had stuck (the carbs had just been re-built) or if the replacement pump was too powerful. We took the bowl off the leaking carb and made sure the float was OK (could have been stuck though). I got the original pump going by putting it on an external 12V supply. It seemed it was stuck and this freed it up so I put it back on and all was well for a few weeks.Cutting out in busy traffic is not good so I need to get it sorted.Do I buy a new pump or buy a contact repair kit? Is it more likely that the contacts have failed or is it something else in the pump that is wrong? How do I find the right pump or repair kit (seeing that this is a grey import it is not so straight forward). Is there a more modern pump design I should be using instead? I am a reasonable car mechanic but bikes are new to me.Thanks,Paul. Quote
Tankbag Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I'd go for the cheapest obvious bits first so on for instance, fleabay there is a kit including the points for 26 quid, or on a UK seller site there's just the points for 22 quid, & if these points pop up easily on a search, imo it means they are a consumable that wears a lot Good luck dude Quote
mrcheese Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 Thought I would post an update now I have had a chance to fix it. It bought a set of replacement contacts and the pump is running much stronger now.I do have a bit of a confession though. The cutting out when back in Reading probably wasn't the pump. Looking at the miles I had ridden and the amount of fuel I put in the next day I think I was very close to running out of petrol. Didn't think to switch to reserve Quote
