Just as the title really, are there any tell tale signs that let you know its time for a new chain, Preferably while it is still fitted to the bike.

Not sure how you go about tightening yours. But on mine i have to push the wheel back (Nut and bolt) and when it gets to the end i either have to change the chain or remove a link. Also if the teeth on the sprocket are worn out thats a potential sign it's getting worn.

Looking at the rear sprocket see if you can pull the chain away from the sprocket at the 3 o'clock position...if you can then the chain is worn. Also check the tension of the chain at several points.....if there's a big difference between the tightest and loosest points it'll need replacing. Oh....and also check the sideways deflection of the chain in the bottom run.....too much sideways movement is also bad.....

Exactly what I needed to know, cheers.

When you say pull the chain away from the 3 o'clock position, should there be a bit of movement, or non at all? Currently I can pull it probably about 2mm off the rear sprocket.

Thats good, I dont have to worry yet at least.

Also Glorian, same method, but it no where near the end yet.

It"s knackered when you find it constantly needs adjusting. Up to that point it will hardly need any, then one day it turns into an elastic band!
