RantMachine Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Right, I've mentioned my dodgy speedo before but never gone into detail. Would be a dream come true to have it sorted in time for the rally, so here's hoping...In short, I have no idea what my speedo is doing at the moment. It's giving a reading, and the fault is consistent. But the reading is always too high, as far as I've noticed it's ~15mph out at lower speeds at ~10mph out at higher speeds. It sometimes give a reading around 15mph when idle, too - not a stable one, kinda bounces up and down between 10 and 20. Rolling it forward a bit tends to get it to sit back at 0. Equally, if it's stationary and a 0, rolling it forwards a bit will usually make the dodgy readings kick in.And naturally I don't have the faintest idea where to look first! If the other repairs hadn't cleared me out I'd probably start buying parts from a breakers and replacing potential culprits one by one, but random trial and error is perhaps not the best approach for a man so far in the red...Has anyone encountered this problem? Or does anyone have a suggestion on where to start? Quote
littlecat Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 I'd start with the speedo cable... obvious and cheap Quote
Stu Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Been a BMW I reckon it will be electronic cat But confirmation will be needed ollie If it is electronic it sounds like it's getting some sort of electronic pulse to the speedo I would be looking at all connections to make sure there isn't any shorts or water hiding any where or corrosion Quote
Adam Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Yeah start with speedo cable, that solved the problem on my NSR and cost £7. For the WR I've ordered a new speedo cable as well but it's yet to arrive so hopefully that works cost me £26.99 :'( Quote

RantMachine Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Yep, it's an electronic one. I think the cost for a used part from Motorworks was about £50, something like that. Looking at the various connections is... A bit of a headache. All of the wires are wrapped together in some horrible stringy black tape, makes it hard to work out what the hell is going on inside there - especially when I already don't know the first thing about electronics Quote
RantMachine Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Thanks for the links Derek, have given them a read through. Already a member of the f650 forum, but hadn't seen a couple of those threads - some sound kinda similar, which makes a change. Most of the stuff I've read was for speedos giving low or no reading.Guess it's gonna have to be a new speedo sensor as the first point of call. Will order one tomorrow, and try to brave the mess of wires on my days off next week... Quote
