smell of petrol when stationary??

Hey all, I have a problem with my trusty liberty 125, 2004 model. I topped it up with what i thought was full tank, cost £5.18 for close to 4 litres, (i believe the liberty has a 6 litre tank) and i ride from work to home usually full throttle :D. Riding into work today and every time I stopped at the lights i got a huge whiff of petrol (this is whilst infront of any cars, before anyone says yeh mate its the car exhaust in front). There has been no leaks I can see where my scooter has been stood all last night, and I checked for any leaks before whilst at work but none.

That said i rode 8.6 miles one way and now i am at work with my fuel light on and a empty tank.

I am not sure if some how the petrol is leaking and that is what i smell, or if i am absolutely ragging it that i killed 4 litres of fuel in 17 miles.

anybody with any advice most appreciated :)

thanks for the reply tango. I think I will have to wait til weekend to see if i can open it up. I have no mechanical knowledge though, anything in particular I should be looking for? there are no drips of fuel when the bike stands.

Best thing to do is when the bike is cool feel around the tank and see if you can feel any moisture, then follow the fuel hose and check for any splits etc and keep following it back to the exhaust. Is your bike carbed or FI?

You won't see a small leak as the petrol will evaporate especially in the hot weather we've had which is why you may not have noticed anything when you've moved the bike.

Hey up. Had to wheel an empty scooter to shell petrol station 2 miles away from work (absolutely knackard) and filled up. Got about 6 miles and im empty. Jumped off the bike as it was running and saw a long line of fuel just seems to be dumped from the scooter. Now the fuel seems to be dripping from a line about the exhaust. Fkn joyful at 10 past 1 in the morning.

I had a petrol leak where i got knocked off. Mine was actually under neath the tank. where it bolts onto the frame.

A good way to test is get a piece of paper and just feel around rather than with your hand. Might be easier to take your fuel tank off to find any leaks.
