Guest Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Hi, I bought a ER5 as a first bike after passing my test. I got the bike home to see it had fuel in the oil and it would not idle just kept cutting out, so after having a look at it I could see that the fuel was coming out of one of the carbs down through the air box and into the casing. So I have taken carbs off cleaned them and found that one of the float needles was stuck open, so that sorted the bike idles and no fuel is coming out the carb the wrong way. But the problem I have now is that its not idling smooth and every now and again it splutters and I get quite abit of smoke out of the exhaust then it clears until it splutters again 5-10 seconds later, any idea's anyone because im stumped and im no mechanic?thanks Ian. OhJay Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Have you looked at/done anything to the fuel tap?Chira's ER5 had a sticky needle and the fuel tap both go. End result was fuel tank emptied itself into the carbs, into that cylinder, into the airbox, into the sump... onto the garage floor...Left it completely open to dry: Sump plug out, oil filter off (and in the bin!), crank shaft end cover off, plugs out...Carb clean and a new fuel tap, plugs, oil and filters and running fine again now Quote
Guest Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Thanks for the replies, yes ive changed the oil and filter and the fuel tap was changed before I got the bike and I have disconected the pipe from below the tap and left a bottle attached over night and no fuel, so the tap is fine. Like I said its not chucking fuel out of the carb now that I have cleaned the carb and needle valve which was sticking hence what I think caused the fuel in oil.but the problem now is that when idling it splutters every say 10 seconds which then chucks smoke out of the exhaust which then clears until the next splutter??So I dont know what to try next? What colour is the smoke......Blue or Black...Bluer means oil burningBlack means excess fuel.. Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Or it could be a bad spark / plug problem. Quote
