Guest Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Hi all, I have seen lots of good stuff across this forum and have been lurking for a bit but the death (hopefully can be resurrected) of my newly acquired NSR has prompted me to register and say something! A little back story, first: I'm 25, love bikes... I have done my cbt 3 times now (twice whilst at uni, and again a month ago), I passed my theory test when at uni but being a lazy student at the time I let it expire - dumb I know but it happens. (No hesitation this time and within the year I will have a full licence through DAS.) I used to have an NSR125 X-reg (UK model, fully de restricted, hmplant paint job) a few years back and loved it. The smell of the oil burning, the loud noise, the deceiving size and shape that makes it look like a big boy bike! I used to ride to London to Pompy and back most weekends and LOVED it! Came off once due to some fuel on the road during a tight turn at 50mph but got up and luckily could carry on with little damage to me or the bike. Now the problem: I have bought an NSR 51-plate 4 weeks ago (UK model, 28k miles) because it was cheap and I believed I could make it work and run like my old mistress and bring back my glory days... It started ok when I went to go see it, but had no horn, indicators and the wiring was a state - as you imagine no MOT either. I since replaced the main fuse, replaced the spark plug with an iridium one (BR9EIX I think?), and put led indicators across the board - have removed the idiot light for now until I get an led for it as it was causing all to flash like hazard lights. I've put a new horn on and got it MOT'ed with flying colours (hooray! Or for a little while). So I drove this bike about 30 miles since it passed and everything was great, then one day as I go to work I'm halfway there, 50mph and accelerating, I pop the clutch to shift into top gear (was on my way to red lining but not quite there) and shift up, the second I pulled the clutch in it died - still had electrics but there was no power there. I tried to drop the clutch to bumpstart it but the wheel locked and I had to pull it back in sharpish and coast it across 3 lanes and into a petrol station, luckily within 200 yards of it dying. Just to confirm it wasn't the back wheel that locked up and the engine hasn't ceased, I can wheel it back and forward. I checked the oil and that seems to be fine, I checked the fuel line of which was fine and by chance a blockage did appear during testing but a compressor blew it out no prob and it seems to flow freely again. The air filter is intact and nothing nitty gritty seems in there. The spark is big and blue so no problem there. When I do try to turn it over you can smell the petrol/oil but not very strongly. When I try to turn it over it sounds like a put-put-put sound, every now and then a louder one like a whoosh of air/pressure build up almost. I was probably going to buy a compression test for the weekend and maybe clean the carburretor out, check the jets. But I think more likely could be piston rings or something worse? All rec Quote
rennie Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 hello and welcome please say hello in the newbies sectionand put your location in your profile sounds like a partial seizure to me but I may be wrong. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 pop the spark plug out and place finger over plug hole see if the compression blows your finger off the head that will give you an idea if there is an compression there, but it sounds like it might of heat seized and then released again as it cooled down in which case a top end rebuilt will more than likely be needed Quote
