Guest Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Heya all, I may have done something silly. The old rim tape on my bike was peeling away so I decided to remove it all today. I wanted to get rid of the old adhesive that was left on the rims so I asked a guy who had been doing bike mechanics/restoration for many many years and he told me that a bit of nail varnish remover would be fine to use to get it off.I tried it on a small bit first and it seemed fine. I continued with the rest of the rim and then sprayed water and muc-off spray afterward. There was a section on the inner part of the rim where there was like some rubbery stuff left over from where old those wheel balancing weights had been previously, so I used it on that part too to help remove them - which it did... but then a while later I noticed the area had gone all hazed/faded! :(I'm not holding up much hope, but anything I can do?http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w11/BBBikergirl/004_zpskh7rfsjh.jpg Quote
Guest Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I am going to stick new tape on as I liked the look with it on, but thats on the outer edge, not that inner part. Quote
GazW Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Acetone is strong stuff, can melt plastic, there's a change you could have stuffed it. Try some t cut or polish and some elbow grease Quote
Stu Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 it could be that the sun has bleached the non rim taped bit and its now standing out because you have taken the tape off t-cut may work you can only try it ps welcome to the forum Quote
Guest Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Thank you Stu It's definitely been affected by it because it was black like the rest of it before and literally after using it on that inner part it went faded as you can see in the pic - just in that area. You can see in the pic 2 darker sections within the faded part - that was where the rubbery stuff from the weights were that I managed to get off and that should be what the paint is supposed to be like.I had such a lovely ride today and this has really put a downer on the day It's not a huge area, but it's still saddened me, I really want to get it back shiny black again. I tried putting some miracle shine on the area but I don't think it made a difference. I'll try again tomorrow - you can't really notice it now it's dark. Quote
