rice-pudding Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Long story short, my fork seal is bust and has a moderate leak. I have a trip planned for Saturday, maybe 400 miles plus. You think I'll be okay with it or give the trip a miss ? Quote
GazzyG Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 The main problem isn't so much your forks giving up the ghost, rather the oil dripping down to your tyres/brakes.Is it dripping down there? If so, I'd get it sorted beforehand - don't want to risk a tumble. Quote
rice-pudding Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Yeah it's drips slightly on the outside of the calliper but mainly misses everything else, the puddle on the shed floor is my evidence. I'm pi**ed off though because it's still under warranty but the waiting list is 3 weeks at the dealer Quote
wr6133 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I eked 1000 or so extra miles from mine by cleaning them out with a homemade fork seal cleaning tool. They went from really leaking to lightly misting. This is the real tool http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seal-Mate-Too ... 1059312192 you can cut your own out of the flat side of a plastic milk bottle. Quote
rice-pudding Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Here's a snap shot of the culprit (after I cleaned the bugger)http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd448/jojo-clyro/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0148.jpghttp://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd448/jojo-clyro/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0147.jpg Quote
Tango Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Yeah.....I'd not be riding that anywhere until the seals are replaced...... Quote
Guest Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 i was stuck with a beadly leaking seal a few months back, so i quickly bought some of those rubber boot things, cable tied the top in place, and then wrapped an old rag around the fork leg, before cable tieing the bottomBasically stuck a rag inside the rubber boot, so it would soak up the oil before it dripped down the forks..passed MOT like that too, since MOT inspectors are not allowed to remove anything to check Quote
RantMachine Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Bloomin heck, that's a lot more oil than my forks were spitting out when I decided it was time to take the bike off the road Quote
Fozzie Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 They are nackered and relatively straight forward to replace, get on youtube, and do it Quote
rice-pudding Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 Will I need to replace the oil too? If so can anyone recommend a good fork oil? Quote
