positive signs of a well maintained bike  ...... you need to check chain tension and lube it weekly or even more often if used in lots of bad weather

I lube it after every ride because my cbt instructor said its best too and i knew i needed to get a new chain soon but not now :crybaby:

But do you also check the chains tension on a regular basis, or was it just flapping around and that was the reason it came off?

You got off lightly with just the chainguard damage the chain could have caused far more, including locking the rear wheel and you ending up in hospital because of it. The chain could also have snapped and ripped into your leg, not nice!

Get a chain tension stick!

A bit of wood cut to a length that if you can fit it under the longest part of your chain, you know its too loose.
