Suzuki GN125 struggling uphill

Hello I am new to this forum and was hoping to get some advice before I take my bike into the garage to be fixed. Any help would be really appreciated!

I have a Suzuki GN125 (98) that I purchased a couple of months back off of Ebay. It's been a bit of a turkey since the start. It would ride great until I had to stop at a junction and then it would just stall and take a little while to start up again. If I revved the throttle at this point it would just cut out. So, on the advice of a friend, I purchased a new carb and fitted that. It is no longer stalling and runs great downhill or on straights but as soon as it needs any power to go uphill it stutters and loses power until eventually it slows down to almost a standstill. I have checked the needle height and the choke is not left on. I have made sure the fuel filter is clear and I am pretty sure there is no gunk in any of the jest as it is a brand new carb. I'm totally at a loss and it's unfortunate but all the troubles are killing my desire to ride. A new bike is probably in order but I would love to get this one going even if it is just to sell it on. Any ideas please??

Thank you in advance

Does this happen no matter what gear you are in when going up the hill?

125cc are not fantastic at getting up hills at the best of times. Could be something wrong with your gearing, or simply you need to drop down a gear to get up the hill.

Thanks Arwen,

Unfortunately even if I drop it down to first or second it still does it.

sounds like your fuelling is off in the new carb

whats the condition of the air filter like?

I'll check the air filter again to make sure. It does seem like there is not enough air/fuel getting through.

How slow are we talking, once you're on a hill? And how steep?

It's stuttering in first or second. Almost down to no speed at all on a modest hill. It's very similar to when a car has gunk in the carburettor. It kinda kangaroos. Speed then no speed.

little trick for you if you can do it

find a quiet hill and start your climb once it starts to slow then put your choke on

if it speeds up or run better then you have not enough fuel going in if it instantly dies you may have too much fuel going in

Hi Stu,

The engine cuts out when I try and add any choke so it would seem that too much fuel is getting through. I think it must be a faulty carb from ebay. next step is to try another one I guess.

Thanks
