Jhncf Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Had an electrical issue with my bike, a 2000 cb500, battery was either not being charged or being drained, took it to a garage and he checked it over and said there was a connector plug at the reg/rec that there was a problem with and he cleaned it out, he said it could be doing with a new connector but apparently they're really hard to get a hold of.. Anyway, before the bike went to the garage it had fried the reg/rec so I replaced it and the battery and it fried the other reg/rec.. The guy at the garage said there was high resistance at this connector he has cleaned and reckons this could be what is causing the reg/recs to fry. Does this sound like it could cause it to fry? I've heard people say the Honda reg/recs are crap and to fit one from a different bike but how would I go about this? Also, on my way home from picking the bike up today (new front pads were fitted), I came to a corner and pulled the front brake and the lever wouldn't pull in, pulled a few more times and the brake went on and seized on solid. After leaving it for 10 mins and a bit of rocking back and forward it freed and I rode it home without using the front brake. Is my calliper knackered or is there something I could try to fix it? Sorry about the story, pretty new to bikes and don't have a clue when it comes to fixing them! Cheers in advance. Quote
oldie59 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Just looked on Ebay there are several reg/rectifiers for your bike on there and there is at least one connector plug. Yes Honda's are well know for frying there reg/rec's and taking out the battery in the process. This could be down to the connector plug wiring not being up to the job and overheating? As for your front brake, wondering if the caliper pistons need cleaning with brake cleaner and an old toothbrush as they can sometimes stick in the caliper. To do this apply your front brake (at home), clean the pistons and then gently push them back into the caliper. This should free them off, but reapply your front brake a few times to reseat the pads before taking your bike out onto the roadIt might be worth cleaning the rear caliper in the same way to help prevent problems later Quote
Tango Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Check the front brake lever mate.......make sure it's not binding.......could also be crappy pads not fitted correctly, so they're not sliding on the guide pins correctly........and, as mentioned above, if the caliper pistons were not cleaned before they were pushed back in for the new pads, they could be binding.Maybe you need to replace the reg/rec plug..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-5-WAY-R ... 43b0f9c202 Quote
Jhncf Posted June 18, 2015 Author Posted June 18, 2015 Turns out the guy who fitted my pads had overfilled the brake fluid.. Drained some and when I went out the front brake seemed okm touch wood! Still having charging problems, so I could try replacing the connector? Also, could moving the new reg/rec to somewhere it'll get more air to cool it help things? Quote

I'd be phoning him straight back and accusing him of attempted murder! Quote
Jhncf Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Trust me, it was far from a good job.. Put my bike into his garage to have front pads and fork seals fitted and the reg/rec problem fixed.. Got the bike back, brake fluid was overfilled, the fork seal that was leaking is still leaking badly (he told me my forks are deeply scraped so the seals won't hold) and all he did for the electrical problem was cleaned a connector that he said i'd be better off replacing and then told me when I picked the bike up that I still have to fit a new reg/rec because mine is fried.. Oh, plus he fitted a new rear tyre without asking me because mine was on the legal limit! I would've had the tyre fitted, but the point is that he didn't ask me first! Quote
