Hey everyone.

I really need a laptop for my gopro. So what laptop do you use for yours and do you know if it has to have a certain amount for shite for it to work.

Probably buy second hand.

What is it you are wanting to do with the footage?

Just copy it off the GoPro and store it? or some video editing and fancy pants stuff for putting on Youtube or similar?

And what kind of budget?

Also.... why a laptop or would you consider a desktop pc?

General rule of thumb for laptops and desktops if you want it to last for a few years at least.

Processor - intel i5 at least. If you want video editing, then definitely i7 unless you want everything to take an age.

Amd proccesors cannot really match intel any more in my eyes for the average consumer.

Memory - at least 4gb. Ideally 6 or 8gb. 16gb is overkill for most, but would help with video editing.

If you go for a laptop, Intel's onboard graphics on 4th gen proccesors and above is rather good at most things. If video editing considered getting a dedicated graphics card.

This is the main reason why you would go for a desktop over a laptop. Desktop proccesors are also quicker, but some high end laptop come with desktop proccesors.

HDD and RAM can easily be upgraded on a laptop, so don't get hung up on them. Processor and graphics is key when buying a laptop.

Ain't really got anywhere for a desktop. So laptop would be better.

Yeah editing cutting it down for facbook instagram and maybe youtube.

At the minute I have to press top and play every fine minutes as if I leaving it recording longer I can't view it on my smart phone as the file becomes too large

None ot that makes sense to me lol. Sorry. Anyone recommend a make and model ?

No sweat dude, what's the kind of budget you've got to spend on this?

That'll give me an idea of what to link you :)

You'll be expecting somewhere in the range of £500, anywhere up to and above £3000!

Apple Macbooks are pretty good for video editing but you'll be dropping a small fortune on one of those.

I'd like to buy used. Like a refurbished one or somthing. Probably about 300 pal.

Thanks matey [THUMBS UP SIGN]

With 300 you will get exactly what you pay for. Something that may work slowly for a while, then it will die.

Video editing is very resource demanding on a PC. All PCs come with a specificatio ln, just like bikes. It consists of what processor it has, how much RAM it has and how big the hard drive is. That is a basic list.

I gave you a list of what you need to look for.

Do some research and you will find loads fitting that list, but not nesecerry in your price range unfortunately.

£300 I'd be looking for a 2nd hand desktop. A laptop at that price is going to be a very basic web browser and a nightmare for video editing.

I edit my videos on either of my desktops. One is an i5 clocked at 4.5GHZ, sli'd GTX670's, 16GB RAM and all drives are SSD's, the other is an old 6 core AMD Phenom II clocked at 3.9GHZ, with a GTX570, 8GB RAM and traditional hard drives...... it's absolutely fine for mucking about editing helmet cam footage, infact you'd struggle to notice a lot of difference between them. You could probably pick up a similar spec (or better) desktop used on eBay within your budget.

As above, you'll be hard pressed to find one that will work at a decent pace without burning out and dying at that price.

If you can hold out and save up some more cash then I'd say that's the best option. Buying second hand sometimes pays off but with pc/laptop components so many things can and will go wrong.

Yeah your all right. I'll save and let my gopro gather dust lol. Thought it was a matter of buy a gopro and record everything lol

Thanks alot guys appreciate all the help

you could use the £300 as a deposit against a new one and finance the rest and pay it monthly

it saves trying to save the money and if you do it right you can get away with not paying any interest too

Sorry to keep on guys. Came up with a great idea lol

Dad has retired and lift me to do the new build.

But ill need a laptop surely no?? Hahah

So I said I'll pay half and he pay half. So 500 for laptop or a desktop guys?

Buy a laptop if you absolutely have to have a portable option.

If it's going to spend most of it's life sat in one place then buy a desktop. You get vastly more performance for your £££ especially if you build it yourself (easy it's like lego for adults).

Something like this would cost about £500 and take you an afternoon to build/setup. Use a HDMI cable to use the TV as a monitor or budget an extra £70 for a 1080p monitor. If you want it to connect wireless to your router then add another £10. May seem like a bit of effort but a decent setup like below will be faster and a lot longer lived than the equivalent priced laptop.

I'd go for the zoostorm from Argos. Many people haven't heard of them but they make perfectly good no frills p.c.'s at a great spec for the price. You could spend the extra £100 buying an SSD to put the O.S. on.

A dedicated video card might have some merit depending on exactly what editing you intend to do. Even the most powerful number crunching P.C.'s can take some time rendering video especially if it's recorded in MP4 format.
