Joeman Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Don't worry too much about the "smart" bit. I've got a Samsung smart TV and never use the smart features. instead I have a Chromecast and Amazon fire stick plugged in that I use for streaming content. Quote
RantMachine Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Dammit, Joe beat me to it!I can certainly second his recommendation though, sod the 'smart' bit and get a much cheaper TV (or alternatively, a £400 not-so-smart TV that outspecs similarly priced smart TVs) and buy an Amazon Fire stick to go with it. Arwen Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I have both a smart tv and a non-smart tv. PS3 plugged into the smart tv and use that for streaming everything cause I prefer the controller to navigate than the remote. Chromecast is plugged in to the non smart tv, works a treat So yea, no real need to buy a smart tv when Chromecasts cost £30.You can get some real bargins on Amazon Warehouse Deals Most are simply returns/open boxes. This Panasonic TX-40CS520B is rather tempting for me... I've also heard good things about http://www.pixmania.co.uk/ but have not used them myself. They seem to have some good deals on just now too.Personally I prefer the colour from the LG tvs rather than the Samsungs. Samsungs always seem far too vivid and unrealistic to me. Sony, Panasonic and LG are always my recommendations. Quote
Glorian Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 Quite settled on a smart TV as i'm fed up with additional devices and connecting devices or pairing them and all this crap, i just want one remote and done. A reasonable picture quality, i've never been one for the latest and best screens as long as it is that nice smooth quality my other half's TV has (LG smart tv) i'm happy. Quote
RantMachine Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 What about this one? That's just about as all singing all dancing as you could ever hope to get for under £400, and it's a Panasonic so you should be able to count on it being pretty decent quality.http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-audio/televisions/televisions/panasonic-viera-tx-40cx400b-smart-3d-ultra-hd-4k-40-led-tv-10133366-pdt.html Quote
Fozzie Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I have a Sony KDL40W605B, and I picked it up last Christmas. So far it has been phenomenal as TV's go. It is a cheaper unit but it is very good, and I heard about it after reading many reviews saying it had advantages of TV's far more expensive than itself. It retails for less than £400 now.40 inch, it is a smart TV but like others have stated you might find them novel at first but you will find more effective means as time goes on.I don't know if you have a console, but if you have an Xbox one it makes a very good pairing. My brother has the PS4 so I will have to check but my Xbox essentially does all I need it to do... If you have it this description will be pointless but being able to walk in and just say "xbox on" and it turn my TV on with it and start playing digital tv is pretty good. Then obviously you can be in Iplayer/Netflix/Amazon Prime with a single voice command. So I highly rate the TV I have, but for what you want, you may as well use a console, which on top of it all will play awesome games. Quote

Quote
RantMachine Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Nope, just Panasonic did the decent thing and actually quoted the refresh rate in hertz rather than using their own bullshit measurement systems like MCI or PQI. A "Motion Clarity Index" of 400 supposedly equates to about 100Hz, and a the Samsung PQI is literally just a scale ranking all Samsung TVs against one another, ranging from 100 to 2400... so a PQI of 300 means it's the joint third lowest picture quality of all the TVs Samsung make. Also if I'm not mistaken HDMI can't handle more than 60Hz anyway, so that will be the governing factor for anything involving external devices such as gaming. Quote
Glorian Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 Glad i asked now I had know idea what PQI and stuff was..Will give it some thought thanks Quote
Arwen Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Yea, you are pretty much discount the quoted refresh rates of tvs! Only useful if you are comparing two tv's from the same company. Both of my TV's are Sony's one is around 9 years old, the other is 4. Both are fantastic. Although the speakers on the newer "monolithic" one are rubbish and I've now got a sound bar That is however the fault with thin tvs ! Quote
bmwdave Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I am on my second Sony, very happy with both although first one wasn't very resistant to a kick from a 13 year old, possible design fault there? Haven't had an LG TV but had a couple of other LG products and had reliability issues with both, now won't have anything from them, which is a shame c'cos some of there stuff looks nice with some nice ideas, but first thing is it has to work every time. Glorian Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Sound aint a massive issue as i listen to stuff through surround sound headphones I also have a cinema system if sound was that poor.Gonna go PC world and have a look around see what is on the market, how it controls and how it looks.
