Drained oil while rebuilding whole bike... issue?

Recommended Posts

So I took the bike apart about 10 months ago, everything! I only drained the oil about 1 to 2 months ago, to lighten the V-TWIN while i work on it and to allow me to put it on its side etc.

So not sure why but I was looking into the oil in section, and I think I could see some surface rust? Not sure, this could be the oil residue (I hope).

What you guys think?

Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure if it is rust, just looked a little orange.

What you think? Major issue?

Spray it with something? Run oil through it? I still have the old oil actually... Should I do something with that?

Oh and what I thought was rust was inside the res, where you pour the oil in, looked like a thin layer of orange, though not dried out, more like liquid, not sure, I will try get a picture.

It will not work with the rust, but you can get sump plugs with little magnets on them to pick up tiny bits of metal, floating about.

I don't think it was rust, it has been inside my studio on the 2nd floor of a mill, albeit for the last 10 months, and with no oil for the last month or two, i think I was just panicking.

I have ran the oil through though, will this be enough to lubricate the whole engine?

I guess them sump plugs are on string you just pull back out?

The user manual will tell you how much oil is needed, overfilling can be as bad for the engine as not enough. The sump plug is the bolt under the engine to drain out the oil, I have never heard of one on string.

I believe the magnet is built into the sump plug. I've never heard of it being on a string either.
