Ello,

Would a usb charger fitted to a 125cc and a phone being used as sat nav, constantly connected to the charger (when riding) be too much draw on the battery? Especially at night with lights on.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 12v socket on my bike for connecting devices to. It's a waterproof one.

You just need a relay, connect it to a running light so it flicks on when the bike is running, and then on the other side of the relay have it connected directly to the battery.

You'll then have power whenever the bike runs. Plenty of circuit diagrams on google to do this :thumb:

Thanks for the info mate. I think I'll wire it direct to the battery with a marine grade switch and in line fuse that I have left over from when I did up my last R.I.B (boat).

That's a great idea mate thanks!

Hi, this one will do the job nicely

It's got a built in switch so no need to be messing with relays or other just connect it direct to the battery with the inline fuse. Be sure to go direct onto the battery as some of the other electrical circuits on the bike are not D.C

Most 125s will produce around 120watts to charge with. This will leave ~4 amps to spare.

At idle it will be half of that at best but you will be fine to have a usb charger on.

I've seen those handlebar power supplies and while much easier they're not as robust as the old school relay. And they look a bit bulky on the handlebar compared with a 12v outlet tucked away somewhere.

The reason they're not as robust is with time their waterproof abilities fail and you get ingress, and then you'll get a nuisance blowing of the fuse. (From what I've heard).

Also I've never liked the idea of having a live connector accessible on the outside of the bike. It's all too easy to forget something is plugged in, and I don't like someone could tamper with it easily. Just a bit of paranoia really!

Just my 2 pence on it. Go which ever you feel most comfortable with!

Guys, thanks for all the useful info. Good to know this has been covered.

As has beed said, for my own personal taste I would rather have the USB connection out of the way to help protect it from the elements. With a mini usb wire to where the phones mounted in it's ultimate addons case. Also the bike is brand new so would rather just wire to the battery in case I void some kind of warranty.

Again, thanks to you all.

There is another option. Get a power bank. The advantage is you do not mess with wires and search for waterproof USB connectors. With wires going from the battery to the handelbar there is always a risk you can short them. Best case you blow a fuse. Worst case bike on fire.

Just put the power bank under the smartphone in the same waterproof case. With very short cable to connect. Because both are inside waterproof case no need for waterproof USB connector.

I have this Arkon case:

Average smartphone/iPhone consumes for a day 2200 mah. If you get power bank 12000 mah it will last for a few days constant use. There are even bigger power banks:

Hi if your using ultimate addons gear then your far better getting there designated charger and adaptor cable to suite your phone and water proof case. Note: There waterproof cases only accept there cable connection due its unique size. Also there chargers are rated at 2 amps which is handy, as some of the cheaper usb charges cannot keep up with the drain on the phone battery whilst it being used in GPS mode.
