back firing through the carb

yet another problem...bike has recently got very hard to start and whem giving it full throttle from idle it lets a big bang out of the carb and dies. what is this? lack of fuel or too much fuel? its a vl125 intruder btw

Check your valve clearances first, if the inlet is not closing fully not only will it cause backfire but will quickly damage the engine.

If clearance are OK, check the ignition timing,

If timing is OK, check the carb, needle valve controlling the float level could be sticking/worn.

While carb is stripped remove and clean all jets making sure they go back in the correct place.

When you put it back on make sure there is a good seal between the carb/inlet and head.
