Security advice please - Chains, disk locks & padlocks - anything?!

Hi there,

My 2007 Ninja 6 had its Oxford HD lock angle ground in a bike bay 50 yards from home last week (central Clapham residential area - no idea why neighbours didn't hear / report it... cos London).

Trakking and Wandsworth Police (many thanks - legends both) saved the bike so I've come on here to ask for some security advice - otherwise (having had 5 bikes nicked over 10 years) I'll sell up and go back to pedals (very reluctantly).

I've been advised Almax Uber IV is about as good as it gets - should I get a disk lock too as deterrent? There's a lamp post by the bike bay I use but that hasn't helped on previous thefts (CBR RR and 3 x Hornets!)

Yes Almax is as good as it gets

I dont think a disc lock would help as if they have a van it will be just lifted in

is there anyway you can fit a ground anchor and maybe use two chains? they may see it as too much work

I am guessing you have looked around for secure storage of some kind

OK Almax it is - just need to find retailer near Vauxhall. No chance on ground anchor - on the road and storage = price of a 1 bed flat around there. Getting the feeling of good money going straight after bad at the moment so have been mulling whether to bother or sell - which is just depressing...

Try and anchor your bike to something like a lamp post or ground anchor, get a heavy duty chain and loop it through the rear wheel and suspension, try to leave as little slack on the chain as possible which will hinder cutting tools and blunt impacts.

A front disc lock helps, another idea would be to use the steering lock and have the bike as close to a wall as possible (makes it difficult to get poles through the chassis and lift the bike), in addition get a motion sensitive alarm like Data Tool etc...

Also deterrents can work well too, have your bike under a cover, put some BS warning signs on it like 'GPS' tracking fitted or 'smile your on CCTV'. Basically, you need to make stealing your bike more trouble than its worth.

thanks - will prob get a tracer sticker, have datatool alarm already so will go for Almax chain & Squire padlock, try and find a bike bay with a lamp post (rare to find lock up bars in London - don't know why) and fingers crossed!

I don't rate Almax too highly - spoke to Aaron who rang to tell me I couldn't get the chain sent to my work address unless I paid with Paypal. Not doing that (various reasons to do with fraud historically) so he offered a refund. Fair enough - chuck a way a perfectly good sale. So he says:-

"I don't care mate - I make millions of ££ a year selling these"

Right - so can anyone recommend the next most secure lock/ chain combo and I'll give them my money - they might want it more and have a payments/ delivery set up not designed in the 90's...
