My 1992 XV750 will run OK with the petrol tap turned off, but as soon as I turn the fuel on it dies.

Anyone have a suggestion what might be causing this?

Does it run then stop when the tap is open?

Could be incorrect float position, I had this, it will run off the fuel in the carb then when the tap is open the carb floods.

Or it could be a vacuum issue in the tank not letting fuel get to the carb

Problem sorted.

Fired her up when I got home from work and she purred like a kitten until she warmed up. Then, same problem.

Turns out she was overheating. The oil was black and had the viscosity of water. I changed the oil and took her out for a spin. She ran a bit lumpy to start but soon settled down and I was out for nearly an hour with no sign of the problem.

I've only had the bike for a month and was told it had been serviced shortly before I bought it. I guess the service didn't include an oil change.

I plan to change the oil again in the near future because I didn't change the filter tonight but, for now, I have my bike back.
