Obrien65 Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 My 1992 XV750 will run OK with the petrol tap turned off, but as soon as I turn the fuel on it dies.Anyone have a suggestion what might be causing this?Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk Quote
hardleydavidson Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Does it run then stop when the tap is open?Could be incorrect float position, I had this, it will run off the fuel in the carb then when the tap is open the carb floods.Or it could be a vacuum issue in the tank not letting fuel get to the carb Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Probably a silly question, but are you certain that the tap is not off when it is 'on'.....? Quote
Obrien65 Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 Problem sorted.Fired her up when I got home from work and she purred like a kitten until she warmed up. Then, same problem.Turns out she was overheating. The oil was black and had the viscosity of water. I changed the oil and took her out for a spin. She ran a bit lumpy to start but soon settled down and I was out for nearly an hour with no sign of the problem.I've only had the bike for a month and was told it had been serviced shortly before I bought it. I guess the service didn't include an oil change. I plan to change the oil again in the near future because I didn't change the filter tonight but, for now, I have my bike back.
