Hi all

Whenever I ride my bike I use expandable ear plugs which really reduce the ambient noise when on the bike - I could not imagine riding without them. However, I'm getting to the stage now where I would like to listen to my iPod when on long motorway journeys, but using the earphones alone means that a) I can't use my earbuds, therefore the background noise level is much higher that means b) I need the music that much louder.

I don't want to loose my hearing in ten years because of this so I was wondering how people managed? What are the solutions to this? I'm guessing it must be possible to buy earphones/earbud units to overcome this... any advice/recommendations gratefully received!

Cheers all,

Rick.

I got some DIY custom plugs (self mould ear plugs) and have some in ear speakers in them, primarily for our comms system but you could use them with an IPOD. If you get similar type things from a retailer then they set you back £150 for these DIY ones it £30 for the in ear things, and £12 for the self mould plugs.

The speakers have different filters in to let you set how much external noise you want to hear.

Or you could just use the self mould things to make decent plugs without the speakers in, again they are excellent and at £12 for a set well worth it, my set have lasted 18 months and still going strong and thats useing them every time i ride which was daily and now weekly at least and they are good enough to wear on my 2.5 hour commute every week.

All you really need to be honest are some high quality in ear noise isolating earphones not cancelling, i have a pair of Etymotic Er-6 ear buds at the moment the body of the ear phone is small enough that it almost sits entirely within your ear so you don't hit the problem you get with most ear buds when you try to put a helmet on and they pull out.

I used these with a motocross helmet on for about 8 months and never had a problem.

I have used loads of different types and most good quality in ear buds will work they just need to create a tight seal other good makes are Shure and Bose but most decent ones will work.

Don't get the old style Apple in-ear buds.

I bought these a couple of weeks ago (all Argos had in stock), and the sound quality is pi55 poor and they keep falling out.

I've tried all 3 sizes of the buds, and get the same result with all 3.

If you get a flat earphone and fix it inside the helmet you can still hear the music when you have normal earplugs in situ.

Yup, what he said. Works well too. Also I found this to be the most comfortable solution.

Hi there

I used to use Koss The Plug http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/p?openform&pc^eb^PLUG ... like earplugs with a headphone in them ... and you can buy replacement cushions. That was on the Firestorm ... loud enough to hear over the music :)

Need to "fix" the pipes on the new baby first before I ride with music again.

But the Koss ones are great ... except I'd stay away from the "Sparkplug" ... supposed to be the same, but sound is crap compared to The Plug ... beats me why, same specs if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps

Merry Christmas everybody
