  1. Hi,

just been working on the bike trying to get to a leeky oil drain pipe that i thought was causing the leak (posted about this agessssss ago... only just got round to looking).

to get to this i had to take the head off, i was just about to do this (i.e. i had the valve cover off).

was just about to unscrew the exhausts when i spotted a potential higher-up oil leak...

right down the center of the head at the front there was clear signs of a leak, i quickly jumped up and inspected the valve cover.

its been cracked and welded (although my dad reckoned it was soulder) and because of this the gasket just doesn't mate propperly..

It looks like a bit of a bodge really. I don't suppose it would have caused a major issue really - just a constant leak..

My problem now is sourcing a replacement valve cover. Ebay is looking promising but just wondered if anyone could recommend any breakers or anything or may even be breaking one. - you never know!..

    cheers

    Chris

  2.

you know that feeling when your reading something on the forum and all of a sudden your heart goes about 200 bpm and you quickly leap for the Haynes manual?

yup - was me being an idiot... i wouldn't care i've done this before but just read the manual wrong....

I was in deed getting confused between the jet and the screw.... I did actually start the bike up with loose pilot jets X 4 when i was trying to balance the carbs... n theres me wondering why i couldn't get them to balance...

Started much better even like that!

glad i never went for a ride or anything... hahaha

that would have been a disaster..

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. hi,

My GSXF600 has never started well since i've had it - i haven't really been on it that much and its an old bike so thought i'd clean the carbs out.

I've noticed that the pilot jets were fully screwed in when in the haynes it says they should be 'unscrewed' 2 1/4 turns...

I think this may be adding to my poor starting problems so i've unscrewed them a couple of turns.

my question is, should the jet be quite loose when you've backed it off? its pretty damn easy to turn with a screw driver - i suppose from a 'screw' point of view this is what i'd expect because its not tightened up - but just wonder if it will loosen / tighten over time?

anyone else noticed this before - anything to worry about?

    thankkksss

    chris

  4. ah right - you can see the sliders / pistons opening in the carbs?.

when you move the jet to a different carb did the problem follow the jet or stay in the same carb?

what about the little linkages that connect the throttle cable (or maybe choke cable?) up? maybe that one is bust or not moving freely?

    lol god knows..

    good luck :)

  5. some may frown but if you suspect its one of the jets causing the problem why not swap that with on in the other carb?

then you'd know.. - how did you identify that it was letting fuel through after switched off out of interest?

  6. right - thats the bike going in the garage next week.

I stook a little oil in and fired it up..

the oils coming from the top of the RHS cyclinder.. The mechanic reckons its a probable / possible head gasket fail..

he's collecting the bike next week so god knows how it'l unfold.. i guess if its too expensive it'l be a write off maybe but not sure how that all works.

    :( oh well

  7. should stick an image of the map on from google maps or something.. im rubbish at finding places..

i only live down the other end of brass castle too, Seamers a nice place though - used to take me car in to that garage there.

When my bikes working again i'll pop in :D

  8. hi thanks for the replies...

I've took the fairing off and had a good look..

I see the two banjo bolts you are talking about but my major problem is working out where the leak is..

Only way i can think of to narrow it down is to fill up the oil and run it again and see where it comes from!..

Think i'll ring the garage tomorrow and see what they suggest.

  9. Hi all,

I've got a major problemo with my bike! as mentioned in the general chat area I broke down in a puff of smoke on my way to work yesterday..

Riding along, gave it too much welly in too low a gear and red lined the bike for probably 2 seconds..

Next thing i know theres smoke pouring out of the bike, I pulled over ASAP and the bike preceeded to drop about a litre of oil onto the road... (I then got rescued by the friendly AA man)

I've taken the RHS fairing off for a good look.. however theres nothing obvious as to where the oil was coming from..

Generally speaking though, by eye the lower end of the engine is soaking wet, and theres more oil on the RHS (RHS exhaust is wet right to the top, left hand exhaust is dry)..

Bearing in mind that my Right leg / boot was soaked in oil it does seem to be something on the RHS thats possibly caused it.

Do you think i should top the oil back up and fire the bike up to see if i can trace where the oil is escaping? how risky is this?

My thinking is at least if i can work out what is wrong i can then go to a garage (somehow - get the bike there?:s) and get them to fix it (unless its something i can do)...

    Oh yeha - its a 1998 GSXF 600, 4 cylinder, oil cooled

    Cheers

    Chris

  10. just looking in the Haynes on mine, theres a hex bolt / nut on the 'timing rotor'..

I think this is right on the end of the crank shaft and so has a more direct action on turning the engine over.

its mebby advised that way because of the gearing or something i.e. putting all the force through the small sprocket to turn the 'big' engine over could hurt it?

    I dunno just a theory ;)

  11. can you push the rear wheel forward on the adjuster, slip the chain off the sprockets, and turn the engine over with a big ratchet/spanner with the plugs out?

  12. okay just having a further look into it...

The pipes just push into the cylinder head (top) and crankcase (bottom)..

They are refered to as the 'oil drain pipes' in the Haynes, and the way you would remove them propperly would be to take the cylinder head off, and just pull the pipes out of the holes....

Looking at the way they just 'push' in, (i know they are obviously held in by the weight/position of the head) but would this suggest that the oil here isn't presurised?? would possibly have thought they would need to be more secure than just pushed in?..

The oil that has come out so far is very minimal, i.e. it hasn't actually dripped from the bike..

couple of pics from the Haynes manual included.

  13. Hi Walney,

I'm not entirely sure how the pipe is actually attached it looks like it just pushes inside but would have thought that can't be right because you would have thought it wouldn't be strong enough

I can physically get my hand in to it,

I've got the Haynes manual but the only point they have it in (that i could see) is when your replacing the head gasket and as part of it you remove / replace that pipe and O ring!.

Hmm think i need a closer look really!

  14. Hi all,

got my 'new' bike now... here we go again. probably going to be doing a few bits and bobs over the coming weeks but this time with the view of keeping the bike long term (its much quicker than the GS was and I think I'll be happy with it for much longer)..

So first problem here we go!

just had a little look behind the front wheel - the down pipes aren't in amazing condition but are air tight and not too bad so please try look past that! (probs get them painted at some point!).

Between the two downpipes on the LHS of the bike, there is a small 's bend' pipe which seems to come down from the head.

its about 4 or 5 inches long and maybe an inch or less diameter.

On the RHS this pipe is dry (if not a bit rusty/ corrosion looking) but on the LHS the pipe is quite wet (looks black in the picture). below this on the engine there is a bit of oil there also...

I've looked on Alpha Sports website http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm? under 1998, GSX600F on #42 there is the oil pump pipes which is about the only thing which looks the same.

Does anyone know if this deffinitely is the oil pump pipe, and whats the best bet to fix this, it seems to be the actual seal at the top of the pipe thats causing this as nothing above that point has any signs of leaking.

Is this a very bad problem? should i not ride it etc? bit worried as i've only just bought the bike... but i'm always up for a bit of tinkering!

    Cheers

  15. hmm, see if they send you the correct one,

    did it match the picture?

with me (different bike) they had an image of the older model - I emailed and told them, to which they told me i was correct and thanks for spotting it etc... they said they would have to order the correct one in and eventually they turned up...... wrong ones... by which point i'd just put the original ones back in and they were fine..

    oh well fingers crossed!
