  1. I was trying to be helpful, I don't understand why you both decided to get all pedantic and focus on the edge cases, all the information was in the link.

Anyway, stay safe but while you can delete it if you like but if it just comes down to straight insults I'm done.

    Cheers

    No one is being pedantic!

As I said its not a clear cut no! and telling someone it is could have a lot of implications on their travel to work! what if its their only form of transport and the work for the NHS! they would have no way to get to work because you said no :?

In the situation that the guy's bike is his only transport and he'd let the mot expire because he was ill or on holiday and had let it slip and now needs to get back to work, has realised his mot is now invalid and can't read a link then I gave bad advice. Or maybe if anyone has bought a car or bike remotely without an mot which will be their only transport to work I also gave bad advice. I apologise.

  3. So what about a car salesmen who has a car on his forecourt with no MOT then sells it to a key worker who needs to get to work

I think some of you have been stuck inside for too long :D

Car dealerships are closed and why would one sell a car without an mot?

    know it all strikes again...

a dealer can still sell a car online, and deliver it safely, so if it needs an mot they can go mot it...

Jesus, what the f**k is wrong with you? Did you just start this because you're bored? Get a grip.

  4. I think you will find that the answer is yes you can but you don't need to as from the 30th onwards its extended for 6 month's

But the posters mot could have ran out before the 30th like mine did so it doesn't get the extension

Some people who use their bike daily might not be savvy enough to know if its safe to ride or not and might want that reassurance

No, the answers 'no' because clearly this has been done to discourage people from doing this to reduce the transmission to save lives.

Yes, it's different if it expired before the 30th, that's why I provided the link.

You're right, if people don't know the bike they're riding isn't safe then they should take it in regardless if they need it.

I was trying to provide helpful information that the guy ay not have been aware of. These responses seem petty at best.

  6. "Your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT expiry date will be extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after 30 March 2020"

This will happen automatically, you don't need to go and get an mot.

The original question was "right would i be able to take my steed for its mot or not plus the tax is up at the end of the month too" posted on the 6th of April. The answer therefore is no, you don't need to.

  7. you can use your car or bike to travel to work if you cant work from home, you don't have to be a key worker.... if your going to be a know it all , know a bit more... obviously instructions not dumbed down enough for some

You started this with "what a load of bollox" and then proceeded with a load of generalised shit. The advice is clear, mots have been extended so you don't need to go so follow the advice.

  8. what a load of bollox, mot stations are open , I tested a car today.

says on the link , if car is not safe to drive you must take to a garage and get it repaired ... then why not just take it to get it mot'd in the first place .

    Is this a serious comment?

If you're a key worker or need the car or the bike for essential journeys then they're open for you if you need them. If neither is the case then they're not open for you and you should stay home.

They dumb down the instructions so literally anyone can understand them, and yet...

  9. I wouldn't bother buying one of those chain tools. Last one I had broke under the strain and took a chunk out of my thumb. The more expensive ones may be stronger but one you start getting to the price link in the thread you may as well get some more general use tools if you don't already have them and achieve the same result.

To remove the chain I just cut it with an angle grinder with a metal cutting wheel. You can knock the heads off the rivets if you like and take it apart that way but if you're throwing the old chain away then just cut through the whole chain.

To fit the new chain I fit the chain to the bike making sure it's the right length and put the link in place. I then use a ball pein hammer and a lump hammer to mushroom the rivet heads. I use the lump hammer as an anvil behind the chain and spread the rivet with the ball pein hammer. The trick is to deform the head of the rivet but while you're doing it keep checking that the link is freely moving. You don't have to deform the rivet that much, the force on the chain isn't lateral.

I've done this for about 20 years and never had a problem. There are plenty of instructional videos on you tube.

  10. Does cold weather make much, of any difference to valve clearances? Checked mine today and they’re all a bit tight. Normally wouldn’t do this until it got warm but we’re in lock down and I was bored.

    This is a 2014 KTM 1190 adventure s.

    Front exhaust are .23 & .20

    Rear exhaust are .23 & .25

They should be .25 to .30

    Front intake are .10 & .10

    Rear intake are .08 & .08

They should be .10 to .15

Manual gives values at 20deg and it’s about 5 to 10 degrees today. Bike has done about 24k Miles.

They’re not miles out except for that one exhaust valve.

    Cheers

  11. * You highlight the dangers of long lead with 40 kg on the end

when we got our rescue lurcher 5 years ago I came up with the bright idea of getting a long 10m lead as his chase instinct was nuts and he hates other dogs. A fraction of a second later when he’s doing close to 30mph away from you, your only thought is “oh fu....”

  12. You may well indeed. The only places open were only serving takeaways and less of them than I'd have hoped.

There were a lot of bikes out today though. I wonder if it's a last chance saloon kind of thing?

I imagine it's more a first chance kind of thing. First nice day in a long time. I bet everybody will be out tomorrow.

First for me this year as it's the first time my shoulder could take it. Chatted to a couple of other bikers from 2m away, obvs.

  13. Tried to carry a birthday cake in a soft pannier on a fireblade once. Bit optimistic with the benefit of hindsight. Didn't end well.

I tried carrying 2 bottles of milk in this topbox in 1976. Didn't end well!

I've had a similarly bad experience with a half case of wine.

I only erased all my bank cards once when I got my first magnetic tank bag.

Who says we don't learn from experiences (he says nursing a painful scab on his forehead where he touched the header pipes while changing the oil this weekend :()

  14. Leave it at work or get another job . I stopped doing homework when I stopped going to school and I strongly objected to the idea right from the word go . Even now I have nightmares about it .

I'm guessing that this is preparation for working at home if required.

I carry mine in a padded sleeve in a shoulder bag or in a padded rucksack in a top box. If you don't have any of that then just wrap it up in a big towel with a rubber band around it. Basically anything will be fine if it stops it experiencing repeated hard shocks.
