  1. I Have replaced the points but have had a spark at the plug since doing that and this was before removing the head.
  2. Just been out to check voltage again. With a analogue multimeter and pushing over by hand I get around 5v from black/white wire which isn’t bad considering it is turning over slowly. But still no spark from coil at plug. I think tomorrow I will try to add a earth wire from the base of generator to ignition coil without grounding it to frame and see what happens.
  3. Thanks for all your help and happy new year too.
  4. Will try that and see what happens. There is a strong blue spark at cable though and analogue multimeter comes up to 6v.
  5. Also the plug had a spark before I removed the head !!!
  6. I have connected a multimeter to the black/white wire and get 6v ac coming out when kicked over. I think if i remember there is also a yellow and white which are as you say for charging and running the lights.
  7. If I hold the black/white wire from the generator near the head and kick the bike over I get a strong spark. This is the wire which connects to the ignition coil. So 6v to the ignition coil is confirmed but nothing comes out of coil when fitted to frame and kicked over!!!!
  8. Its as though grounding the coil on the frame shorts the spark out !!!!
  9. For sure. I keep going back to the fact that it was ok before removing the head on the engine !!!
  10. Thanks I did try this but am going to try it again as it must be something obvious !!
  11. Have confirmed the ignition coil is working correctly by using a 6v battery remote from the bike and got a strong spark on the spark plug.
  12. Sadly I already have the original spacers fitted under the coil.
  13. It’s got to be something obvious but the fact that the black /white wire will spark when held near the head and kicked over is making me think its not related to points ? 6v at connector on black/white wire and ignition coil checked and 100% ok. Leads me to think its when coil is bolted to frame but earthing of coil to frame checks good too. Will try earthing coil remote from frame and kick over and see what happens. Am very confused !!!!!!
  14. Have just tested the ignition coil off the bike with a 6v battery and got a spark at the plug.
  15. Thanks. Will give it a go but before removing the head and lifting the barrel it was the black/white wire that was connected to the ignition coil and created a spark at the plug. The only other thing i can think of is the o rings on the head bolts but its a long shot. Plus why would the black /white wire spark if coil doesn’t !!!
  16. I have cleaned all the brackets holding the engine. Also cant understand why the black /white wire would spark when touching the head if it was the head gasket !!!
  17. I didnt have the battery fitted in the bike when I had the spark at the plug. Only thing i have done is removed the head and lifted the barrel.
  18. The weird thing is the only thing I done is removed the head and barrel. Before doing this I had a spark at the plug.
  19. Already tried that but no good.I thought it may have been bad earth on engine bracket so have cleaned them up to bare metal !!!
  20. So 6v from generator to coil and ignition coil works but no spark when ignition coil is bolted to frame.
  21. Have just used a 6v battery and tested ignition coil. If i earth the coil body to neg on batt and hold spark plug to body of coil. Then touch positive wire from coil to posative on batt I get a spark at plug so ignition coil is good.
  22. Yep. Already tried but no spark !! It’s as though the voltage is lost when connected to the ignition coil. It’s baffling me.
  23. I dont think there are any earth connectors. I think the earth for the generator is via the backplate in the engine. The earth between the engine and the frame is via the engine top steady. If it was a earth problem then I would not get a spark from the black/white wire when putting it near the spark plug hole and kicking bike over !!!
  24. Hi. First of all thanks for your help. Yep have tried with spark plugs and tried with plug cap removed just using bare ht wire. I am a mechanical fitter by trade but this one has me stumped !! It seems like the voltage is lost when connecting to the ignition coil as if its being grounded out !!!
  25. I have 3 coils now which were all new !! Have done the tests as per Haynes manual and all check out ok.
