  1. Hello again Lovely TMBF. It has been a while. I managed to let the engine run low on oil and blew it in a dramatic fashion whilst pinning it (to keep to 60mph) on A roads. Taken it all apart and have sadly come to the conclusion that it will be cheaper to do a straight engine swap. Thing is, I have yet to find a replacement for under £400. When the bike itself is only worth ~£650. My question is, could I stick a CG125 engine in? From what I can tell there only difference is slightly different gearing and the use of an OHC rather than OHV. Is there any reason it shouldn't fit/work. It is just I've seen several cg engines sold for under £200.


    Love to hear your ideas on the subject, possible other engines to consider or am I better off going to a scrap merchant and cutting my loses?


    My girlfriend yesterday bought herself a scooter yesterday and feel more than a little gutted I can not go on a ride with her.

  2. Well, I replaced the air filter about 50 miles ago and only afterwards realized I forgot to oil it. I've ordered some appropriate gear oil online since but I'm wondering what the likely damage would be long term? So far, it's been running a beauty but I've noticed the oil which I recently replaced has become dirty rather quickly.


    Obviously not using it for ride out until it's sorted but, I need it for work tonight (5 miles in total). I say need, I suppose I could walk but you know. Is this a real no, no? Your thoughts please?

  3. I had a new chain and sprocket set put on about 1k miles ago. Since then, the chain has needed tensioning a couple of times, no problem. Today I removed the front sprocket cover for a long over due clean. I couldn't help but notice that there was some play in the front sprocket. Am I right in thinking this should be attached as tight as it could go? I can imagine the vibrations (it is a vibey single cylinder) has worked it loose. Else, the fellow at garage didn't do a very good job.


    Figured I'd check first. Thank you in advance.

  4. Never tried welding but have had great success patching all sorts of holes that developed in my rust bucket of an exhaust. Did you warm up the exhaust beforehand and let the putty harden overnight, at least? What shape, and how big is the hole?


    Fitting an exhaust isn't a big job, something you may be able to do yourself if you want to keep labour costs down.

    Does it stand up to the heat? I have a tin of that lying around but didn't think to put it on the exhaust.


    I'm in much the same boat as you jakey, used the cheap Halfords high temp matt black spray as a temporary solution. I ran out about half way through the second layer and it's starting to show. Watching this thread with interest.

  6. In the rain I basically ride normally Take corners smoothly but with respect to the conditions.

    Also AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE

    White Lines

    Manhole covers

    Diesil spills

    Gravel

    Banding strips (The strip of tar that joins the road together)

    Potholes

    Sheep ETC


    Look well ahead into and beyond the corner, sort out your speed, choose your line, command the road and you'll be fine.

     

    Good advice. Have faith in your machine and try and stay relaxed. Oh, and don't forget to have fun. :)

  7. I should state I have never had much in the way of water in the tank. Advice I was given was to switch to reserve (petrol will float on water) after you've filled the tank up and the water diluted. Hopefully this will burn through the mix.


    Your safest best is to drain it and fill it with fresh though as already mentioned.

  8. I want to spoil myself for christmas and buy a pair of race quality gloves with wrist protection. The current budget pair I own offers negligible protection and, after having a few minor offs, I want piece of mind. Thing is, being vegan I'm a "bit funny" about leather. I may just missing the obvious but I cannot find any quality, fully textile gloves. Those gloves usually listed under the textile tend to have kangaroo or some other bit of hide stitched on to the palms etc. I know leather has excellent abrasive qualities but with the advent of modern synthetic materials, I'd have thought alternatives exist.


    Obviously fit comes into it but, is what I'm after even out there?

  9. NOS just puts me in mind of laughing gas. Could also include switching off indicators, steering lock, various other locks and not leaving the key in the ignition, as part of normal shut down routine. Perhaps auxiliaries too (heated grips etc) if you're lucky enough to have them.


    If you can come up with an acronym that incorporates that, that would be awesome.

  10. Intend to check it out (first time for me) and pick up some bargains. Will be interesting to see how much the overdraft stretches. It'll all be in the name of my safety though so it'll be easily justified.

  11. I fixed the issue. I'm not sure of the technical name but the connecting rod between the servo foot brake and drum was bent. End result was the rear brake pedal was too sensitive and the vibrations of high speed activated the drum brake. I'd have looked a numpty taking that to the garage.


    Panic over! :D


    Off the road for less than 24h and I missed it like mad.

  12. Not quite sure what has happened. I took my XR125 off roading and landed a couple of jumps quite hard. Either way, on my return journey it didn't take me long to notice that whenever I increased the throttle to 3/4 in 3-5 gear, the rear wheel kept seizing up. I kept bobbing back and forth as the wheel briefly locked. The rear brake is of the drum variety.


    I managed to nurse the bike home. Big sigh of relief as I have no road side assistance or friends with vans.


    I thought initially that it might have to do with the chain being caked in mud but after giving the area a good clean and lube, the problem still remains. Any help diagnosing the problem would be much appreciated.
