  1. hi all,

i own a sym xs 125 and when accelerating hard or full throttle it sometime chockes and it turns off . there is a term for this which i can't remember it now but basiclly it is as if the bike gets no air in the combustion chamber and does not accelerate. the will go away if i hold the throttle on full on position or drop gear . this even sometimes happen as i want to pull quickly from traffic light.

the other issue is when it is cold and i ride the bike as soon as i pull the clutch in the bike switches off . this is not always the case and has happened few times. especially when i go around 50 mph in 5th gear and then pull the clutch in then the rev drops and then the bike switches off.

i made a change which seemed to help slightly with the first case which is when i pull off from traffic light but the issue is not fully resolved. what i did was, i openened the side panel and rotated the head of the air sucking plastic ( shown in the link below) toward front of the bike so it can suck air. before tha it was pointing to the back of the bike and no flow was going through it thus sometime not enough air supplied and chocked, did i do the right thing ?

now my next step is to listen to what people advise in this forum on what to do to fix it but in adition, i am thinking of replacing the air box with a cone shape filter which you normally put on cars.

below is a link to it , what do you guys suggest?

    all helps are much appreciated

  2. @uk190,

thanks. you are right they are cheap. although mine is not chineese and tiwan which is slightly better.

i bought it because it comes with 3 year warranty and 2 year 0% finance and the cost is same as a normal honda possibly(1.5K) so why bought it really. since i had it the rev counter has failed twice and the speedo 1 time so it is cheap in my view, is it that common for rev counter to fail every 2 month ?

in regard to interval it is recommanded to do 3000 kmh which is around 1800 miles and that is very expencive to do as stated above ( at dealer £110ish) if i do it my self then i see 5-6k as reasonable , any objections ?

  3. hi all,

it is winter and need to get a new pair of gloves,

i bought the following gloves from ebay which is ok when it is warm but when cold it does not keep you warm

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Buffalo-Torna ... 619wt_1199

i am newbie to bikes and don't have much experience on clothing and etc, in your experience are there any glove types(material) that really keep you warm during winter? i also have muff but rather take it off if my gloves are warm enough

    Thanks

  4. thanks,

how often do you guys normally change oil or how man y mpg?

for instance on car some people say that you can do around 6-7 but i always changed it at 3-4k or if it is a year old.

i think it is same for bike, any other suggestions?

  5. Hi Guys,

I have a sym 125xs and sometime when trying to adjust the chain , i get really confused on how to adjust the chain and make sure the wheel is aligned

looking at the references (the metal refs) the wheel wheel looks ok and aligned but i think because i have either overtighten the nut or cheap quality of the metal, some part of where the washer sits on is dented thus you can not see the lines on the metals.

I have used rulers to measure the gap between the end of the metal and the nut edge on both side but this is not accurate. looking from behind i am a bit of paranoid and think it is not straight

Any ways you suggest ? does it have to be dead accurate , what are the consequences if it is not

    would it drop you ?

    thanks

  6. all replies appreciated many thanks

i guess will only change the oil then

one thing is, when i undo the bolt to adjust the chain i don't know how much to tighten it to ensure that it will not undo itself and the wheel poping out . so i always think i have tighten it enought and scared one day i may break it

  7. @stu,

i do drop gear down but sometime you need a very quick reaction and it is too late to drop down and then accelerate thus just i either open the full throttle or drop to 4 and then open it but always thought that may cause an issue on the gear box

    thank for all posts

what i meant by driving in high gear is, most of the time i leave it in 5 and when climbing hill the bike doesn't struggle much but can feel that if i push it then it will so i was asking if that is bad for the engine in your view . my answer to my self would be yes and i have to drop down

in another word i tend to drive around in 4 or 5 most of time . when pulling away from traffic light after 500 meters i am back in 5 so hope this give you a style of my riding which i guess i have to change if i want to look after my bike

  8. what is the rpm that u normally keep the bike on while ridding around ?

i thought 4-5 was good but by the sound of your style of driving it will be 7-8 k but again that depends on the bike, mine is only 125 thus why doing 40 miles in 5th gear keeps the rpm on around 5 and doing the same in 3rd will be around 8k

  9. is oil, spark and filter all you do on bike regulary or as part of full service

is there anything else that should be regulary checked ? by the way how often or miles do you change spark and oil, my bike has done around 5k and so far had its first service which was minor so the oil was only changed

is 6-7 miles reasonable for a bike for spark and oil ? as mentioned the manufactures insists on 3 k (kilometers thus 1.8) which is very low and expensive

i should say I rather keep my bike safe and sound than save money but having it service every 2 month is just too much at £110 per service .

  10. hi gents,

my bike is quite new , less than a year old and the manufacture suggests that i should do a full service every 3000 km which is around 1800 miles . this is very expensive at £110 a service as i do around 1k miles everymonth thus have decided to do the service my self .

how often do you advise on changing my oil and spark ?

is there anythingelse i should check as well?

i regulary ( every month or two) go around the bike with a spanner to ensure all screws and nuts are tighten up. i also do the chain adjustment every 2-3 weeks plus lub every week

    appreciate all inputs

  11. hi guys,

i have a 125 cc bike which i use it to ride from home to work everyday and i do about 1000 miles everymonth

the question i have is , is it ok to drive around in 5th or 4th, the reason i ask is because my rev stays on 2-6 which is low but sometime when i need to pull away i either have to drop gear down or push the bike which puts strain on the bike

i have noticed a good mpg when driving in high gear while in city but as my bike is new not sure if this damages the engine in long term , please advice

in your view what is the high rev and more than usual for bike, for instance in cars anything around 2-3 k is ok but of course car can only rev to 5-7 safely depending on the car

    Thanks

  12. i did a through nut and bolt check and found that the two nuts for the fork were loose, the front light, speedo and 4 nuts that hold the steering while or whatever it is called to the front fork

    two points,

the nuts seemed very fragile and cheao quality, do you recommand changing them ?

the fork two nuts needed about 3 -4 turn to tighten them up, was i meant to tighten them up using the torque which you can get from 17mm spanner or wrench , i don't know if i have over done it. the pic of the nuts are below

    pic of those nuts below

  13. Hi All,

I have a new sym bike as some of you may know and took it for its first service at 300km

i don't know if the dealer has done a proper service but i don't think he has checked any nuts and bolts as the bike vibration has increased and my rear brake pedal fell off on the way to work todaY !!!

is this normal, does it require regular tightening ?

in addition, i am going to do a full nut and bolt check to avoid further and hazardous surprised that could end up killing me like the wheel falling off

what things and bolt and nuts do i need to check?

i did a chain slack adjustment and have aligned the wheel and tighten the nuts and bolts ....

    thanks

  14. the mechanic was suggesting that a disc lock could have damaged it if it was on and i have tried to move the bike which i never have and even lets say i have it does not have that much force to bend a disc

coming from car background , £70 for a small disc is pretty expensive which is thin where as with car you can get both sides for £50 or less depending on the car

    thanks

  15. hi all,

my front break is not behaving.

the brake is really weak and it is noticed the most when i am going slow around few miles and apply the front brake whereby the brakes are like on and off . it brake and leave it and then again

speaking to mechanic they told me that the disc is bent which is what causing the issue. it is pushing the pads out and in.

the bike has done only 1200k and i think the disc is warped due to poor quality , any ideas?

    thanks

  16. Hi guys,

i did pass my mod 2 and am awaiting to receive my license.

in meantime, does it show A or A2 on my license?

in another word, how do DVLA keep a record of the restriction, through thier system or on the license?

if on the license then i guess that you have to send it back after 2 year for it to be change to full license

btw, i think my A2 restricted is treated as full license for insurance purposes and.. and the restriction is only on power band

    thanks
