Fast tapping noise

Recommended Posts

I bought a CBR600RR (2004) just over a week ago, and these past two days I've started noticing a very fast tapping noise coming from the engine. It's kindof second to the main engine sound. I've checked the oil level, and that's fine. Not sure if this is just me being paranoid and hearing sounds that were there before or not, or if it's an actual problem. What kind of things can cause this kind of noise?

Thanks for any advice,

Cheers,

Dan.

I am no bike mechanical expert but just an idea as i had a similar problem and just needed to tighten a screw, could it be the fan?

could be the cam or followers! some engines do it especially when cold,

has it been regulary serviced, is there enough of the right oil in it?

if you're worried get it checked out!

it's probably normal though

I have thought the same sometimes, my blade seems to do the same and the zx6r I had before it....does make you kind of paranoid especially of its a new noise..I find I cant hear it as much with ear plugs in

But if its a worry get it checked as Rennie said!

Like Techno said I tend to notice "strange" noises when I'm not wearing my ear plugs!

Like Matt said check the simple things first. I once took a whole day to get down to the valves to check them, and it only turned out to be a rusty exhaust jubilee clip that needed replacing!

Does it happen more/less at a certain rev range? I.e. can you hear it more on idle or at 3,000 or 6,000 revs for example?

It could be a multitude of things, but here are some ideas:

- Cam chain could be loose - check cam chain tensioner

- Exhaust rattle - check all bolts, jubilee clips and exhaust manifold bolts

- Check service history to see when valve clearances were checked

- Check generally across the bike for anything loose, including fairing and fairing bolts/screws

- Check service history for last service - could be a loose spark plug rattling about

Like I said, it could be a few things! But you can check a lot of that yourself pretty quickly. Things like valves need a Haynes manual or you might want to take it to "an expert" ;)!

I've got a bandit 6 and when its running i can hear a tap tap tap coming from the top of the engine, not loud but noticeable over my loud exhaust, i have put it down to valves :S yet i really don't have a definite ansa, the bike engine is working fine with the right oil and plugs are fine, could be the plugs sparking ??? but i suspect you have to same noise to me :)

I'd check your sparks are screwed in to the right torque. My old bike was a GSX600F (feels weird calling it my old bike, only sold it 4 days ago!) and that had a rattle that turned out to be a loose spark. Also check when your valve clearances need doing. You don't want them f**king up!

i'll check them, but i'll get a service sometime soon on them cos they were done a few thou miles ago, however i have changed oil loads of time since then so dont see why there will be a prob
