Hi, I'm kinda new to this forum and just need some general advice... Basically i have a new standard exhaust to fit on the bike (it looks different to the one its self). The bolts that needs unscrewing from the main engine part when it meets are seized I've tried WD40 and it still hasn't worked... I though instead of blunting the bolt heads i thought id get some advice on how i can remove them to put on my new exhaust.

The bike seems to have some sort of sealer stuff on it which is flaking off looks very stupid as well and one of the bolts is covered in this which looks bit like a cone and is also covering the riverty bits

Wondering if it would be worth taking it to a garage and then getting them to fit it and de-restrict it at the same time but wondering what the cost is likely to be?

Sorry for my lack of technical words but i have alot to learn and looking forward to it! :)

I'm 17 and i have a DNA i wanted a 125 but for 250 quid for the bike, Bike jacket worth 200 quid and a helmet worth 100 quid i cant turn that down :P . that was from a friend - And before i get judged i respect bikes and don't intend to tune it and kill it slowly like most people my age with bikes and the reason i want to derestrict it is personally i think 30mph is dangerous :)

Thanks for any help or advice :D

sealer stuff  sounds like exhaust paste which is used to stop the blowing. Can you post up some pictures so we can see what your trying to do,if its the header bolts your trying to get off then yes they are a pig after a while try getting the engine hot sometimes this expands the metal enough to release the bolts, also make sure you use the correct size socket, dont use a open ended spanner you will round them off

Yep, what Gary said.

As for taking it to a garage, give em a ring and see! I shouldn't think it'd be an absolute fortune....

Ok if these pictures are no good I'll try in daylight tomorrow after work :)

The one that's seized but more likely easier to take off:

The one that's covered in 'messy' exhaust sealer stuff and looks impossible to take off:

And I'll give them a ring tomorrow - Only problem i have with garages the fact they like to tell you problems with your bike that never exist! And they cost money which is why its my last option :)

Thanks

Well... If you gonna tackle it yourself ...

Loads of WD40, leave overnight.

More WD40

Use a wire brush to remove rust, exhaust paste, and other crap.

Use a good fitting socket, or a ring spanner.

Undo (easier said than done lol) It is possible the nuts could be seized to the studs,

so the studs may unscrew from the engine block.

Worse case scenario, the studs snap. Then you'll have to drill them out.

Hi,

Top tip  , dont heat up the seized bolt, heat up the metal around the seized bolt, heating up the bolt makes the bolt expand making it even tighter in the thread, also heating up the bolt make the metal of the bolt go soft rendering it useless. you need to make a differential in tempreture between the bolt and the engine casing. Its the bolt that you need to shrink - keep cool and the casing heat up - expand to allow its removal.

Try using a small blow torch with a fine flame around the area of metal securing the bolt, you don't have to go mad and get it all red hot, A squirt and soak of anti siezure oil will also help before you start. Works for me, was shown this way years ago.

Best of luck

Sorry - update, only just opened up you pic's. The same rules applies for seized nuts.

Wire brush the area and clean the stud threads as best you can. Give the the threads a good soaking of anti seizure oil. Again its the nut that you need to heat up and expand, a fine flame is needed to heat up the nut only, no need again to get it red hot. Have a suitable socket and wrench at hand to fit the nut. Do not over heat the stud at all cost, the metal will go soft, your then on your way to a real drama.

Take your time you will win

Best of luck

WD40 as wonderful as it is, as an all rounder , isn't a very good penetrating oil. Get a specific penetrating oil with graphite. A small spray can , with capillary will come in handy for all sorts of jobs. Leave it near your tools. 8-)

derestricting will invalidate your insurance as your licenced for a standard 125cc, as a learner (on (L's) at 17.

as for removing the exhaust, i'm with everyone on here, take your time, rushing will take longer in the end...

Sam,

top of the engine, and probably one front side panel

W40 is great for electrics, but get a proper pentrating spray, it'll save time/effort in the long run..

Oh another problem i got is its tickover is at 3000rpm and slowly lowers itself then back up.... is this becuase the exhaust is coroded???

Posted

dont know about the exhaust corrosion causing it but i think most DNA's do that, i know mine and a mates does.

but 3000 rpm's quite high, mine hovers around 1900, so lower it down a bit, the screw for that is on, or near the carb. much better for yer money!
