A few helmet questions...

Hi all, so i'm looking to get myself a new helmet in the January sales. As some of you might remember, my current helmet is second hand that the guy gave me with the bike. It blatently has been dropped and it isn't a particularly tight fit anymore (which i prefer, but apparently it needs to be haha).

So what i'm looking for in a helmet is as thus;

Comfort

Flip-front (or whatever you call it, where you can open up the full front of your helmet)

Pinlock

Not too expensive (I don't mind spending £200 or so, but i don't want to be getting any £500 Shoei rossi reps or anything haha.

Firstly, are flip-front any good? Any major problems or disadvantages?

I would like to be able to listen to music and comfortably have a comms system. Do helmet come with these things built-in?

Scuberth are the best in flip fronts. With built in speakers etc.

Caberg do good flip fronts as well.

Budget £400 + for Scuberth, £150 ish for Cabergs

I have owned the Caberg, only thing that bugged me was, its a little noisy.

flip fronts are only as strong as the bracket holding the front on, i was looking at the shoei multitec for a road helmet as it had insets for the intercom headset.

get to J&S mate and just try loads on, shoei normally fit me but the new multitec is awful on my head. no idea why as the old one was spot on.

I know the police wear flip front, but it's always been a worry for me. Essentially they have the potential to become open faced, or as I like to call them "useless".

I have heard people talking about plastic vs metal pins to hold the chin guard in place so that would be worth looking for. Other than that I have no advice about them since I've only ever owned full face helmets.

Many forces have stopped issuing flip fronts for reasons I covered in previous threads.

Don't forget, most Police kit is purchased by a supplies officer who does not know one end of a bike from another and willl go for price rather than quality.

A lot of forces stopped issuing these helmets after complaints were made by the riders and many refused to ride wearing them.

according to sharp the safest helmet is the BMW system 5, it sez the latch remained closed on 100% of impacts.

Interesting. I missed your previous comments but that really reinforces my loathing for them. I'll stick with the full face personally.

I've got myself a Caberg Trip, very comfortable and i believe it does quite well in the SHARP ratings

Also has an integrated second tinted visor which works well, as previously stated main downside seems to be it's a bit noisier than the Shoei full face helmet i have.

It is also very good at remaining fog free, think the visor comes coated with something

Been in Hein geirike today and they are selling Schuberth S1 at 249 quid down from 400. From my personal experience I will say that it is a better helmet than my Suomy R1 or my Shoei XR 1000. Its quieter and more comfortable and great if you like single colour helmets.
