Headlight issue

Hi guys, a weird one this. (Or maybe not, i may be stupid  )

anyway, basically, my bikes headlight wont come on leaving it sitting there on side lights. At first, a nuisance but easy to change a bulb. I've since noticed however that although hi-beam wont work from the main light switch (dont even get the blue warning light on) i can operate hi-beam using the flasher switch. Seemingly ruling out bulbs i thought? My bike is a CBF500, so only has 2 bulbs upfront. So does anyone have any idea what's going on? I fear a horrible electrical issue :(

any thoughts on this most confusing subject (for me) most appreciated

sounds like a break in the wiring system

have you got a wiring diagram and a multimeter? its time to start visually checking wires and doing a continuity test to find out where the break is

i once had it where a wire had rubbed through and watter had got in and corroded the wire until it broke down and couldn't carry enough electricity to power the high beam i snipped a section out and soldered a new wire in there and all was well :)

or it could be the selector switch!

clean the contacts up and see what happens!

if you're really lazy just spray switch with electrolube

:stupid:

sound more like the selector to me to.. open up the switch cover and check its not earthing on the bars, if so leccy tape to the bars to insulate and spray some WD40 and use a toothbrush to clean the inside contacts, try before you bolt back together, if it works great, and try once bolted back down, if not then its defo a handlebar short issue.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the help guys!

After a slip on the ice last week it started working again

so sounds very likely to be contacts or the like. I'll get it apart and clean them up tomorrow.

Thanks again!

I seem to be having the exact same issue on my Hyosung GT125r (sidelights on, main and high beam dont work, but the flash button does) Its a pain in the arse to take the bulbs out, let alone to get back in. I have checked the bulb, but doesnt look like is anything wrong with it, however, i have brought this one just in case its the wire thats attatched

I have already sprayed the light switch with WD40.

What else can I do?
