Hi everyone,

I tried to start my bike the other day to make sure everything is O.K as the really cold snap seems to be at an end so want to get back out riding soon.

First time in about 4 or 5 weeks I've tried it and it won't start. Previosly when its been left a few weeks, all has been well and its started after a few tries.

I kept trying to turn the engine over with the choke on, but after a few minutes I could tell the batery was starting to lose charge so I stopped.

The bike is a 1995 GSXR 750 WS, I am new to biking so have never done anything mechanical with it, but I do have a basic understanding of how an engine works and which bits do what.

Has anyone got any suggestion of things I can try before getting the tools out, or the best thing I should try first when I do start fiddling.

I'm thinking check spark plugs for a spark and check the fuels getting down there, but they are not easy to get to so before I start messing with something I'm not qualified to touch I though I would ask for advise.

Any advice will be appreciated,

Many thanks

Obvious one first, check battery condition, charge if necessary.

Might take a while to fire as well....

Yeah,

At this stage i would say your best bet is to charge the bike up and give it a few more attempts.

You would be far better off having to recharge the battery a few times and making sure there is nothing wrong before you start digging in because once your in there your in lol.

I would suggest keep going at it with the starter, if not recently replaced maybe throw in a fresh spark plug or clean off the one in there?

Give it another shot and get back to us, then i'm sure someone will tune in with a good trouble shooting approach for an unknown non starter :)

Best regards

Ps, remember to check yr break's, fluids, tire pressures and give the chain a look over.

Nothing better than preventitive maintinance!

Thanks Dan,

Battery is fairly new, bought at the end of last summer. Was probably not fully charged as after trying to turn it over for a while I could tell it was losing strengh. This was after maybe 5 mins of trying though.

Shall I just charge it up and just keep trying to start it for a good while, until I try anything else?

Edit: Cheers also SF, your reply didn't appear till after my reply

It'd be where I would start. Before you start looking at anything else. Like plugs and leads etc... and check the killswitch!!

Get a haynes too.... bloody useful book of lies lol

And it won't be long before Walney will be along with some more definitive advice :thumb:

Hi, after trying numerous times, l would suggest to take the plugs out and have a look at them.

There more than likely wet now with un burnt fuel, given them a clean and warm them up to dry off the fuel. You can do this by holding them with a pair of pliers over a flame. Once done, let them cool enough for you to be able to handle and then refit.

Do not keep cranking the engine for long periods on the starter motor, or you will end up with the starter motor or the electric's to it burning out.

If you live on a hill and confident enough to try it, try bump starting, this gives you maxium electrical power to plugs without the drain from the starter motor.

Best of luck

P.S You don't say just how long the bike been left, one thing l can say is that Unleaded fuel is shite if left to long in the tank and carbs, had a nightmare of a job to clean the carbs on the bimota after being left for a few months.

your GSXR will benefit from a fresh set of plugs and a charged battery.. as longs as the starter is rotating all killswitches and safety's are off, so not stopping it from firing, but my bandit was exactly the same in this weather...
