Clutch/Gears issue...

Hi all, got something i've noticed for a while but its not really a big problem so i just kinda left it. But i guess it'd be nice to sort it :)

Basically, its like my clutch doesnt fully disengage 1st gear sometimes. Like, when i pull clutch in and pop it into first (from neutral/still) it jumps forward a cm or two, but it isnt so strong it pulls me forward much, and i dont noticed much (if any) of a change in the revs. sets off fine, changes gears fine e.t.c... However, say if im coming to a stop, what i usually do is whilst moving, drop down into first gear. What happens, is every gear is fine like feels like free rolling (which it is), but when it hits first gear, i notice is slows a bit and the revs go up to 2k instead of its usual 1k idle.

Im wondering why its only 1st gear, and only sometimes, that this happens?

Any ideas guys? Thanks :)

Could be because the rev range in fist is smaller than the rest of the gears so the engine braking is much harsher than in a higher gear? I know mine jumps forward when I go from neutral to first but not into other gears.

Yeah first gear is the shortest and most powerful gear. No real need to knock it in to first unless your going like 5 mph.

That clonk when going from neutral to first is just them engaging and is fine. You may find that on a centre stand first gear and clutch in the rear wheel will still move slightly. IIRC this is just oil drag and is fine.

I used to get it where it would actually pull me forward a bit and be a PITA. Especially in the cold. A clutch adjustment and oil & filter changed pretty much totally fixed this. all i get now is the clonk when going from neutral to first.

(you should hear the clonk on say an R6..... now thats a clonk )

Yeah, the clunk isnt a problem, is that when the clutch is all the way in, 1st gear shouldn't be engaged... should it? :S

Its probably because you have a wet clutch

the plates are wet and the coating of oil causes a little drag when the cluch is disengaged

it will happen in the other gears but it shows more in first because of the lower ratio

you'll get less drag as the oil warms up

well yeah, it is engaged, and has been said, its just oil drag. Esp when cold (may be sticking a bit too). Try changing the oil ? Worked for me!

Sorry, I have to comment on this.... it's not the most powerful gear.... there is no most powerful gear lol.

Each gear produces the exact same amount of power, as it's the same engine ;)

My CBR clunks into first with a thud, wouldn't worry about it.

In a sense your right, but im reffering to ratio

Hence why sports bike have long first gears, lots of power all the way up to 100mhp etc. but snatchey.
