Which oil should I use?

Recommended Posts

I've always wondered what the best type of oil is. There's so many different kinds of oil on the market, I thought I should ask for some advice.

The bike is a Honda Hornet 600 inline 4 - 4 stroke.

Any help would be appreciated. :thumb:

I heard and so far my limited research into it seems to agree (key word there is limited), that Mobil1 and AMSoil are the only true synthetics, the others are class 3 or something whereas mobil1 and AMSoil are class 4. The higher the class the better. I got bored reading about it though.

AMSoil do detailed reports on their site about oil ratings, so even if you used another company, you could use their site to learn what you need.

I'd be careful about asking local garages who sell oil, as you might find they recommend the oil they sell for purely commercial reasons. "Surely not" you shout, "people wouldn't do such a monstrous thing". Alas, they would and very often do. :(

I use 10w 40 as recommended by suzuki and semi -synth, only other factor is price, regular oil changes is better than top dollar oil and infrequent servicing., IMO

(rock oil semi synth £5.90 a litre wemoto.com)

I work at a car garage and we have one oil in bulk, that we use for all cars, it costs £2.07/ltr... so dont think dealers are using top dollar stuff either....

How often do you change your oil Simon, manufacturers recommended timescales or more often? Also, what's your opinion on magnetic sump plugs - good investment or gimmick? Thanks.

Annually, or 5K miles.. which ever is sooner. and a hi-flo filter, sump plug is magnetic, but doesn't need to be, if you are getting metal fillings on a magentic plug, then you need to do some investigation, but bits tend to show when you decant the oil into a container for disposal. magnetic sump plugs dont show sealant thats been shoddily applied and collapsed into the oil stream.. something more for used (and abused) bikes,

always change oil / filter, and sealing washer.

usually 10/40 semi synthetic.Ive heard fully synthetic can cause wet clutches to slip.
