Guest Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Although its probably the same for all bikes, I have a bmw1200 rt and Im about to attack it it with a red and black wire from a sat nav cradle i've just purchased. should i take a feed direct from the battery with a fuse break or take it from somewhere else. Any suggestions appreciated. Quote
Guest Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 fit a 12 volt socket, like a cig lighter affair, wire socket to battery under seat and fit connector to sat nav, then sat nav can just be plug and play and removed when not in use.. http://www.themotorbikeforum.co.uk/view ... 12v+socket Quote
TC Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 If its the cradle that is permantly fitted to the bike. Personally i'd conect it to the battery with a fuse in the the wire like you mention.Because as soon as you take the sat nav unit off the bike it will stop drawing the current.Dan did a thread about wiring things to your bike somewhere on here.My Sat nav is removable so i've done the frankie method 12v socket (Good for blowing up air beds) Quote

Guest Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Many thanks for the quick response, new to this site but impressed with the set up and speed of response i've got. I think I would prefer to run from the ignition switch but unsure which wires to tap into. The cradle is a designated one for the bike and will therefore be permenantly attached so would probably avoid a 12volt plug and go for a route straight off the battery unless anyone can guide me from the ignition harness. Cheers........ Quote
Guest Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 From the ignition harness can be tricky, but using an ignition switched power line is much easier. Rear light feed for example, and a relay.Have a read of this, see if it makes any sense to you http://www.themotorbikeforum.co.uk/view ... =5&t=31638 Quote
Stu Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 if your planning on doing it from a switched source i would go for headlights as they are at the front of the bike as is the cradle so you will have less wire trailing aboutor just simply find any live feed when the ignition is on and tap in to that the earth can go anywhere like a bolt to the frame or something personally i wouldnt tap in to the loom as people turn their nose up and resale time i have gone to the battery which makes it easy to remove for other bikes Quote
