I'm off to Ireland for 3 days next week, I've got day 1 sorted for what to see n do from Dublin to the 1st nights stop at Limerick (R479 coast road and the Cliffs of Moher :)) day 2 is Limerick to Waterford, will be taking in Killarney,Cork and the coastline etc. but was wondering if anyone knew of any hidden gem's along that south coast? day 3 is Waterford to Rosslare for late ferry to Fishguard so will be playing that day much by ear :)

thanks for the reply but from what I can see Ireland has but one route put up on there

We won't go far wrong hugging the coast a while and stopping at Killarney and Cork but figured I'd best ask incase someone knew of a stunning bit of road like the R479 :)

This might be a bit out of your way if you're heading to Limerick.....

Look at the map in particular spot G (no puns) Glenmacnass Waterfall. Or get yourself through the Wicklow Mountains. Or Both. Quickest way is to come down the N11 then across. Like I said it could be a bit too much of a detour though.

I've never ridden the roads but used to work over in Co Wicklow a good few years back fitting Sky Digi. We were based in Wicklow and covered a 30 mile radius. Stunning scenery everywhere.

If you ride down any of the B roads (shall we call them) be careful of non existent junction markings. When we first got over there we couldn't understand why everyone was driving so slow. Then after about the 3rd crossroads you just realised you'd driven straight through at 60 you started to slow down too

Hope this helps. Looking forward to the write up. I've ridden in N. Ireland a few years ago when I went to watch the Bush Road Races but would love to ride Southern one day.

Again, might be a bit out of your way, but if you can get to Dingle in Kerry, head up to the Connor Pass. You get a fantastic view of Brandon Bay and out over the Atlantic.

sorry for late write up!

Basically it went like this.......

Ferry from Holyhead at 2am ish got us into Dublin port around 6am. We used the M1 M50 M4 and M6 to get over to the west coastline as soon as poss via Athlone. Stunningly empty dual carriageway at that time on a Sunday morning too lol We decided this was a countryside as opposed to a City break so we skirted and big towns whenever possible. As we approached Galway we took a left southwards and headed for the R road that would hug the coastline and take us to the Cliffs of Moher. We took a right turn off the N67 at Ballyvaghan and were rewarded with the R479 a stunning peach of a road for bikes and views of the Atlantic :) R478 took us to the Cliffs of Moher, an awesome place to visit!! all sorts of accents and languages from all sorts of people, a very popular place and for good reason. N85 and N18 took us inland to Ennis,Shannon and our overnight stop at Limerick. 270 miles covered in a loooong day after just a couple of hours sleep overnight on the ferry.

Next day was Limerick to Waterford via as much coastline as possible along with a ride through the Killarney National Park. We headed down the N21 to Killarney but didn't see any Castle signs and didn't go looking so we never bothered kissing the Blarney stone

N71 took us through the centre of the nat park and would be the highlight of the trip in my mind. Stunning stunning views and tight twisty roads with tunnels carved through stone by the Flintstones it seemed

There are a lot of gems of little towns to be found on the road down to Bantry bay, I lost count of the times we stopped to take pics! Ballylickey is one that stuck in my mind too :)

anyway all this took more time than we imagined so we had to cut short the coastline and head on an N road to Cork and then Waterford...... 275 miles today with huuuge smiles all round :D

day 3 we decided would be easier since we were taking the ferry back from Rosslare to Fishguard so headed straight to the coast and ambled along at no pace at all. Hook point was quite a place to see with the Atlantic splashing up the rocks towards the lighthouse, Spent a while here having tea and cake and taking in the fresh air! did a fair few other little quay's before stopping for a walk around Wexford and having the proverbial Guinness

Got the ferry back at 9pm and arrived Fishguard 1am and the girlfriends house by 1:30am

A full 3 days on the road in Ireland and we got a whole lot more done than I though possible! Absolutely stunning place and coastline I loved every minute of it and will go again for longer next year :D
