stevie16v Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 right, got my second hand carbs through today for my xj 600. i swapped over carb 3, due to the pilot screw being knackered. all back together, back on the bike....nothing. Fuel appears to be getting to the carbs but it isnt firing. I've taken the plugs out and they dont smell of fuel. Any ideas? Quote
Guest Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I imagine best bet is to prime the system by using something to pull fuel through. I don't have enough experience with carbs, need to wait for someone who does... Quote
stevie16v Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 thanks dan, fuels getting to the carbs, doesnt seem to be getting to the intake but jets etc are clear Quote
Guest Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Sounds like a ballache mate Trust me the modern (fuel injection I mean) ones are too when they go wrong lol Quote
stevie16v Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 never had the pleasure of a fuel injection although, if i could afford a new bike i would Quote
stevie16v Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 Phew, Got it working with just manually filling up the carbs. But, the revs are through the roof now. I've unscrewed the throttle stop screw out as far as it will go, Not using the choke but its still at 3k revs from cold. Any suggestions? Quote
caretaker Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Just a few thoughts- Is your fuel tank breather pipe clear? ie make sure no vacumn in tank..... open tank cap to make sure and try again with it opened... if you turn it over without the plug in, does it emit fuel vapour from cylinder? Quote

eastanglianbiker Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 is the throtle cable snaging somewhere if you look down at carbs and operate throttle is the unit the cables sit in operating properly, when throttle closed and revving at 3000 can you push the cable unit on carb down by hand, also its not uncommon for a bike to rev at 3000 when on full choke Quote

I can move the mechanism by hand aswell. If it was on full choke i wouldnt be bothered, But thats it with no choke...oops lol Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 are the cables adjustable where they fit into on the carbs have you adjusted them there and on the throttle stop screw that is normally under that bracket? Quote
stevie16v Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 yup, theyre adjusted ok. even with them off it still revs its head off. im just thinking, mabe ive put one of the springs on incorrectly Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 you might have to take carbs off again and check how the butterflies are sitting in the carbs and then operate linkage by hand see if they all moving the same Quote
