Guest Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 yes this isnt a great start. trying to remove the right hand cranckcase cover from my engine to get to the clutch. the oil is drained and all the bolts are of the cover. its stuck on no amount of pulling is making it come of. bikes also rocking about while im trying to get it of. how do i get this of ?thanks Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Sometimes there are dowels that locate the cover to the engine, if you are absolutely sure you have removed all the bolts try giving it a gentle tap around the edges to try and dislodge it. Prising it off is not recommended as you can cause distortion and that will cause oil leaks, but sometimes it's the only way Quote
Guest Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 its got dowels in but i cannot get the thing of and im getting really frustrated Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Do you have a hot air gun or hairdryer? you could try warming around where the dowels are to see if that causes it to expand and let go Quote
Guest Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 iv been hitting it with a hammer and block of wood. i can now see the green gasket at the bottom where the case and cover join and there is oil leaking from there. do i need to carry on hitting it until it breaks free ? Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I would say so, but gently and try working all the way around evenly so it doesn't jam on the dowels.Good luck Quote
megawatt Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Try working a craft knife or thin blade between the cover and casing. Move it all the way around. Try to avoid ripping the gasket. Quote

Guest Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 i managed to get the cover of in the end and have made a little progress.i got some wound up about the case not removing so i got really angry and gave it a good pull to release my anger and it came of loliv know taken the clutch apart and replaced the old friction plates. the old frictions were red and brown and looked a little worn.just got to sort the gasket out and tighten up the clutch etc and then should be done thanks for the help Quote
megawatt Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 anytime mate, did the gasket survive? Make a new one outta cornflake box? Quote
Guest Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 the gasket stayed on the cranckcase cover but had come of at one point. i then ripped of half of it with my hands. just got the areas to remove around the bolt holes and also the odd bit on the actual cranckcase. iv got a new gasket ready to go in. think im guna try brushing the old one of tomorow.does it matter if i get wd40 inside the cranckcase whilst removing bits of gasket ? the water pump pipes are still connected to the cranckcase cover so iv got some string and hung the case up just means i dont need to drain the coolant and mess about refiling it/get the air out the radiator.i cant see the next bit taking too long all i need to do is clean the oil strainer/ refit the clutch castle nut and springs, then remove old gasket, fit new one tighten evreything up. megawatt Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 A bit of wd should be ok, buy don t go mad Quote
Guest Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 right this morning iv refitted the clutch nut and springs. now iv got the rest of this gasket to remove and its really being a pain. iv picked a lot of it of with my hands but my fingers are getting quite sore now and its proving to be less effective. one problem i have now is whilst trying to clean the gasket of a spring and a bolt head thing came out. i think this is the bit that pushes the clutch when the lever is applied. so any help trying to sort that would be great. the gaskets being a pig. wd40 and a toothbrush and im getting no where. is there some sort of gasket remover you can buy to get this stuff of ? i really dont want to use a stanley as im sure il but divits in the case and it will never seal again. heres some pics the peice that fell outhttp://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7972/dsc4356l.th.jpgboth caseshttp://img38.imageshack.us/img38/1000/dsc4358f.th.jpgthe case and the remianing gaskethttp://img30.imageshack.us/img30/4591/dsc4355c.th.jpgold clutch friction plateshttp://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7917/dsc4363n.th.jpg Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 A Stanley blade used as a smoothing plane will work - I've done this lots of times. Keep the blade horizontal and 90 degrees to the edge angled back at around 30 degrees (if that makes sense?). Do not 'saw' but smootly push the blade.Use gasket paste (Hermitite (select correct grade {colour} dependant on the seal required) on the new gasket.Ensure inside cover is completely clean and WD40 free before re-assembly."Bolt Head Thing" - unfortunately my work PC blocks some pictures so I can't see what you are on about. If this is the thrust rod, then you just need to push it back in place. It will come out if you have pulled the clutch lever during your work.Best advice is to consult the workshop manual (Haynes are not too bad). Quote
oslin06 Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I often use a small wood chisel to remove gaskets, but do not damage the alloy so take it easy and get under it in one go, do not scratch around, works well for me. Quote
