Ingah Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I've been looking at this item on eBay:cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220723092174&category=9946&_trksid=p5197.c0.m619It's a top box - i'm looking to get a big cheap one and it looks just fine for that purpose. But i've never fitted one before though, so i'm very slightly lost on what else exactly i need. The advert includes this bumf:"Universal metal base plate and fitting kit includedEasy fitment (luggage rack is required)".So what else do i need - literally just also buy a random "luggage rack" and then the job's a good un', right? Or is there something else i need / something to watch out for (like brands being incompatible or something)? Quote
DG Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Can't click on the link as I'm using my phone at the mo, usually there is a bracket which bolts onto your bike and then the topbox will fasten to the bracket. Of all the ones I've seen and used the topbox has a quick release mechanism which will allow you to remove the topbox from the bike while the bracket reamains fixed to the bike.HTH Quote
bullet5 Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Basicaly it goes like this:Bike,Bike Rack,Topbox Mount Plate,Topbox. The topbox mount plate stays fastened to your bikes rack, normaly with some 'W' shaped pieces of metal with a bolt hole in them. The topbox can then be removed / attached within a few seconds (After you've gotten practise) by angling it onto the mount plate, and locking it down, (normaly with a catch built into the handle of the topbox) So the last thing you should need for your bike would be a bike rack after buying a topbox like this. HOWEVER be prepared to have to nip out, to buy some metal to make some larger 'W' shaped slats, that your mount plate can fasten to your rack with.Sorry if that's a mouthfull.I can post pics if you want.Bullet5. Throttled Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 It should look like this from underneath...http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5253/5537382511_47e376ed7b_z.jpgThe universal fitting plate is attached to the rack with the supplied fittings which use an allen bolt through the fitting into the plate. Then the top box screws onto the fitting plate with a supplied screw which fits from inside the box, so stopping it from being unscrewed from the outside. The plate is secure as you cannot get anything into the space between the bike and the fittings, it just looks bike in the photo. Quote
