JamieK Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I've been told that riding bikes on motorways long distance can ruin your tires? Is it true and to what extent? I mean how far on a motorway as I am hoping to go to the seaside soon which will be a 2 hour ride mainly on motorways? Will my tires be knackered after or not?Plus the sv's front tyre looks like it's been on the flat alot as its flat in the middle..But I don't no how much was motorway etc.. Quote
techno Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 No your tYres wont be knackered after 2 hours It would take a hell of a lot and would depend on the type of tyres you have on, but personally i certainly dont worry about that! Quote
Decor58 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I did about 400 motorway miles last week are pretty decent speeds, tyres are perfectly fine, it's when you get into 4 figure motorway mileage they can become flat in the middle which can effect handling a little bit, but it wouldn't ruin them unless you was going very fast for a very long time. Guest akey Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Jamie, I think what people are talking about is tyres 'Squaring off', but this happens to an extent on whatever roads you do as you spend more time upright than leant over.I used to commute every weekend from home to london and back down the M1 and using decent rubber my tyres didnt square off until they were near needing replacement anyway.Worst case scenario is putting super sticky track type road tyres on (dunlop qualifier or supercorsa) and doing lots and lots of motorway work with little or no twisty riding. It wont ruin your tyre but the tyre will square off before you would otherwise replace it, this will effect the handling as the bike will resist turning and then feel like it drops into the turn.Normal, everyday riding with motorway miles and other riding, with normal fast road or sport touring tyres will do no harm at all mate.Hope that helps. XmisterIS Posted May 1, 2011 Posted May 1, 2011 My main concern on motorways is finding things to do so that I'm not bored to death! Quote
XmisterIS Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Motorway driving/riding is boring, end of. It's funny, I actually like motorway driving because it's easy and you can listen to music and/or the radio and have a relaxed chat with the passenger (assuming you have one!). Motorway biking, however, is as boring as all hell! Quote
Throttled Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I enjoy a 10 minute blast on the motorway. I live near the end of the M8 and it can be very quiet with a couple of long straights...... Quote
bex Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 i do a lot of motorway riding and if your riding properly its not boring, there are far to many cars for you to be driving, overtaking and lane maneuvers to do and lots of hazards to look out for. i find it more brain draining than country road riding constantly having to guess peoples movements.as for squaring your tires off, it can happen if your slow rider like me on any road, not just motorways lol Quote
techno Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Motorway riding is boring as throttled said infact I use it as time to plan stuff that I may be doing later, imo way less brain taxing than small country roads! All traffic going same way at reasonably same speed, pretty straight roads and decent road surfaces!Boring!!!
