if you read this off mcn it says to stay at maximum torque to get most mpg..

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/RidingEvents/ridingeventsresults/Riding-skills/2009/December/dec2209-how-to-get-best-mpg/

now you see im riding my sv650 at about 4k and thinking thats prob the best for mpg but it says to go to max torque which is 7k and that to me sounds to much and makes me think how can that be good for fuel economy

so anyone who is good at riding economically, how do you do it??

then they say.. A Ducati 1098 achieves its best mpg of around 59mpg at 75mph in fifth

wish the sv would do 59mpg!!

Posted

You should be able to get 59 out of an SV easily.

Are you riding in too high a gear? Having to open the throttle more to compensate?

A lot depends on the type or riding you do. If you do a lot of town riding in start stop traffic your mpg will come right down. I can get 55 out of my cbr without trying. I'm no Rossi but I don't hang about either. But then all my riding is out on flowing A roads, apart from the 1 minute it takes me to get out of town.

Dunno why people read that kind of stuff, I dpersonally dont care so much on the bike I have enough to think about, but any econony run is down to that particular bike too, something serviced should do better, what exhaust do you have on am sure will make a difference.

Just ride fuel runs down out some more in if you worry about fuel economy get a 125

Posted

well its restricted with a standard exhaust..

and on a motorway run i did 140 miles on £20.50 and worked out it was about 43mpg

that was in 6th gear at about 80-85mph most of the time...

to me that sounds terrible!

As daft as it sounds, it is correct. It is a common misconception that running at low revs equals lower fuel consumption, but as mentioned up there ^ , you need to open the throttle more when the engine is labouring and this uses a huge amount of fuel.

Best thing Jamie, is to play with your bike, on one tank of fuel, ie keep the engine at higher revs, then compare it to a different style of riding on another tank of fuel.

I get nearly 50mpg outta my Blade, and i don''t hang about. I've had it much much lower of course ... but I blame that on the weather ... :angel12:

ok thanks for the tips

ill try different riding styles for a few more tank fulls then if it dont seem to get much better ill take it back to the shop as its got warrenty and ill see if they can find anything wrong :P

people on wikipedia have said it should do 40-55mpg and range at about 186 miles,

186 miles mean 49mpg so ill see how close i can get to that :D

Posted

Don't worry could be worse, you could be getting 45-48mpg on a well-serviced CB500. It's kinda lose-lose-lose really

(But hey it's worked for 2 whole months now :D)

'Pumping losses' are apparently a very big fuel waster. And they are at their lowest at peak torque. So some sense is being made. However you can't take the article literally, as peak torque on a CB500 is 8K RPM and in 6th that's about 90mph! (think air resistance!)

I'm glad you linked the article, as i've been looking for an excuse to use a lower gear more, now i've got one :D

Posted

i can only dream of them figures!!!!

mine says 37mpg in the book and i know full well i dont get that

i have a car for economy 65mpg 8-)

Posted

Glad I read this, I too thought lower revs = better fuel although now I think about it this is definately wrong since throttle is what controls the fuel flow not rpm.

I think I'll be adjusting my riding technique after reading this!

Although does riding at a higher rpm not cause more ware on the engine or anything? (I've no idea personally)

not enough that you would notice and actually it would be better for the engine as its not working as hard :)

Posted

just tried the higher revs.. well thrashing it for a bit but the fuel light was already on when i set off and well...

i had to ring a mate to fetch me some petrol ..

130miles to a 17 litre tank!

i make that about 34mpg..i think the bike needs to get for a check up or a service or something! that terrible!

Posted

LOL

It isn't a case of thrashing it, too higher revs will do the same as too low,

practice on a full tank, see what happens.

Posted

ill check air filter spark plugs etc..

even though cmc where meant to service it when i brought it but ive had probs with them before!

Posted

34mpg isnt too bad

the advertised 40mpg will probably be best

you will be mixed riding? stop start town work etc if so then thats about right

get the bike on a run and you will see that 40mpg if not better :)

Posted

I can ride steady or fast and i usually get 39.9mpg i work it out to be

Did a full tank on motorway miles in 6th at about 80mph most of the time and got 43mpg lol

Ill try going slower in a higher gear as wind resitance has a lot to do i think

Ill keep trying :P

Posted

Air filter aint great which wont help and need to bring home a spark plug socket.. We'll clean out the air filter see if i get any better mpg.. Worth a try

Not bad to say CMC clay cross 'serviced' it 2 month ago!!

Posted

Dont complain thats what I got!

Now i just dont give a hoot....

Posted

yours is a full dogs bollocks supersport bike, so i wouldnt expect 40+mpg but mine isnt a supersort so i expect 40+mpg :P mine got 33bhp so god knows where all the fuel is going!!

:stupid:

TBF I think I get very similar MPG from both bikes :?

Also I think the restriction isn't helping your cause, I think it lowers it a bit. Anyway 40mpg is pretty good really..... Thats what I got on average but sometimes lower...I think my worst is 80 or 90 miles to a tank  But that was mid winter and long warm up times.... best would have been close to 120 IIRC. Like I said I get similar now on the ninja....

Also, really, mixed IMO didnt really affect the MPG of the bike... well... riding through town is stop start and if im on the open road I have it full beans so I suppose thats why

Posted

thanks for editing that alex, i obviously meant that! :P

whats? ( 120 IIRC & IMO )

and yeah ive had the light come on at 95 miles which is the lowest :P best is 120 miles

i have to go through city centre some weeks and it never affects it really :)

ive cleaned old air filter out abit but i think imm gonna look at a k&n one as that should help air flow + fuel economy :P

ill let everyone know how much ive done to this tank by the weekend

urban dictoinary is your friend if you don't know things like that

IIRC = If I Recall Corectly

IMO = In My Opinion

120 = 120 :wink:
