recently the bike has been misfiring/backfiring, or whatever it is when it pops when i change gear if i am accelerating hard from a cold start. I have never noticed it before, so is it to be expected, or is something wrong? (to be honest it might happen when its warm too, I havent really been on it long enough for it to warm up recently as it has only been used for the two minute rush to college and back for exams)

If something is wrong, whats the most likely thing?

And is it likely to do damage if left, because i quite like the misfiring noise, it makes it sound better (it is only a 125 after all)

Thanks, Alex

I used to get this on my Ninja when was running it from cold, somebody told me it was just petrol buidling up in the exhaust then exploding and nothing to worry about.

Accelerating hard from coldhttp://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z28/Colin_the_bear/69.gifStop it. Most engine wear occurs when cold.

You should let the bike warm up before you set off. Nothing like a misfire when you're leaning over and need the engine for balance.

If the engine is cold then combustion isn't at its best. Add into the mix a wide open throttle throwing in extra fuel and a lot of it isn't being burned in the cylinder and will find its way into the exhaust. At some point when the mix is right in the exhaust, it will ignite.

Apart from wasting fuel/money you are causing engine wear and compromising safety.

Take a minute to let the engine warm up to a point where it ticks over smoothly without choke and go easy on the throttle till it's at optimum running temp. Less is more 8-)

thanks Colin :) as i said i have only been doing it for the past week or so because i have been rushing around. i will give it a minute or two to warm up again now.

Thanks for the help! :)

Make sure your exhaust is sound too......no air getting in around the downpipes or between the downpipes and the silencer.....or anywhere else for that matter. Apart from that just take note of what CtB is saying....you need to let the oil get round the engine before you give it some stick.

Good Luck.
