annoying chain !

uhh can someone have my bike sent to the scrapyard please :D

just one thing after another spending twice a week adjusting something either because the chain has tightend itself/loosend itself or gone rusty ! think iv been tightening it to much as it started stretching like mad and its only been on since the end of january and has done exactly 3345miles

so with the bike on the paddock stand i start to tighten it then find the tight spot by spinning the wheel once iv done that i get the tight spot to around a inch free play. then when i tighten the thing up it tightens itself so sometimes i have to loosen it of and loosen it of then retighten the axel once more. then the chain is perfect ride it a few days and its tightening itself up (this is checking it with the bike on its side stand) or sometimes i find it very loose. my gears are very sensitive to a loose/tight chain so it has to be right and i cant seem to keep it right.

just had a look at my chain tonight and its covered in rust. sort of rust like brick dust. last week i took the front sprocket cover and noticed the sprocket covered in rust. not the teeth but the side of it where the bolt goes through it. so whilst spraying the chain with chain cleaner i sprayed cleaner on the sprocket and scrubbed it of. think then that rust has spread on my chain and now iv got rust evreywhere. so what can i do here have i got to remove the front sprocket and cover it in wd40 and start of again so theres no more rust about and also clean the chain guards it its sprayed all this brick dust rust evreywhere ?

as for the tension im out of ideas im the king of chains iv probably adjusted my chain more times than a lot of people on here and iv only had the bike 11months

i gave up tonight thought nah lobbed tools on the floor and come in lol :D

You said to me the other day that you adjust your chain twice a week... surely if your having to do it that often then its time for a new chain.

It had new chain and sprockets just cant keep a decent tension

It had new chain and sprockets just cant keep a decent tension

That means your chain is fooked. Even I know this 8-)

fook that then not changing it me thinks its ok il try again take of front sprocket clean it up refit and see how it goes

if your chain is loosing its tension your not lubing it enough

a chain stretches as it wears it wears because of lack of lube

i have had my chain on for 5000 miles and its been adjusted once and that was in the first 1000 miles which is the bed in period

look after it before it snaps and takes your leg off

i lube it fairly often once a week. its a non o ring chain so it needs constant looking after but having to adjust it all the time is worrying and annoying. im going to have a good look at it tomorow see if i can pull it of the rear sprocket

Posted

constant adjustment is two things

not lubed enough which if its going rusty it cant be :?

and adjusted too tight

your supposed to adjust it with weight on the bike and not on a paddock stand you know

Posted

Bin the chain and sprockets. Buy DID Gold X ring chain and Renthal sprockets or the best you can afford. Sprockets are cheaper when bought with a good chain . Bring em to Winster and we,ll fit em.?

iv have been adjusting on the paddock stand and i did read the other day to adjust it with riders weight so i think iv been running it too tight.

thanks megawatt your to far away for me though. im only keeping the bike for another month or so so see how it goes

When a chain is too tight, it will bind on the sprockets, causing quicker wear of both chain and sprockets. A tight chain will also, over time, ruin your countershaft and your countershaft seal (the seal around the shaft that carries the front sprocket) and may even bend the countershaft. Also, a tight chain is more likely to develop tight spots. Tight spots are portions of the chain that stretch at different rates and cause binding between links. So, why not just run the chain really loose? Well, too loose and the chain runs the risk of flying off the sprockets. Bad news! Also, too loose causes a lot of slop in the driveline. Example: twist the throttle, short delay, then lurching as the chain snaps tight, then loose until you are under heavy acceleration. Chain adjustments are very important, even though it may not be something you need to do very often
.

From the tinterwebs... you need to replace them...

Its £60 for a DID chain and according to the listing DID 'approved' sprockets.

having thought about i dont think its that bad. its only a little chain and it blast it everywhere. will take the chain of sprockets clean up the sprockets and check if i can move the chain of the rear sprocket once back together and go from there. not paying out silly money just yet

You shouldnt tighten it on the paddock stand really, I never did on the old CBR125.

Sit on it and the properties of the chain change again and it will be more loose or tight. Find which it is as if its been getting too tight then it will just stretch like a air balloon in space.

The thin, bicycle chains 125s use only last 8000 miles or so tops. I saw a Varadero get to 10,000 but even that had a chain half the size of the one on my 650.

i hate admitting defeat the chains sh**ged iv had the chain of and cleaning the sprockets thought id move the wheel on the swingarm to see how far it had stretched. there are no chain limit stickers on my bike someone removed them all and iv got about 1cm of movement till im on the maximum the wheel can go back on the swingarm. god knows how iv managed to stretch it that fast its only the last week or so iv noticed it tighten/loosen itself. the links are fine no stiff links.

seriously something gone wrong here but to have stretched like that in 3300 miles given that i do thrash it a lot but still

no way its gona pass its mot now so not even any point booking it.

bike really annoys me

Just be thankful you have a sports-ish 125...

Your situation could be far worse, I saw a chain hanging loose on a Suzuki cruiser style 125 last night. He was trying to rag it and got taken by a van... A VAN!!!

The CBR125 I had use of did about 6000 miles before the chain got replaced as the previous owner hadnt looked after it properly. From the sounds of things you've just over tightened it or lubed it with WD40, which eats the seals

i have never used wd40 on the chain :D iv adjusted it correctly and gave it a good clean. having messed with the chain i think iv had it too tight so its set fine now.
